Washington quarterback Alex Smith is ready to take a major step in his comeback from a compound fracture in his right leg.

The team activated Smith from the physically unable to perform list on Sunday. The news was first reported Saturday by NBC Sports Washington.

Smith broke his tibia and fibula when he was tackled during a November 2018 game against the Houston Texans during his first season in Washington. He required more than a dozen surgeries and had to deal with a life-threatening infection.

Smith's family were seen on his wife Elizabeth's Instagram account Saturday spraying the quarterback with champagne in celebration.

Smith told ESPN on July 24 that he had been cleared by his surgical team to resume football activities. He was placed on the physically unable to perform list on July 27.

On Aug. 4, Washington head coach Ron Rivera said he was pleased with Smith's recovery and could see a possible quarterback competition in camp with Dwayne Haskins.
