Aztec wrestlers Bryson Valdez and Makayla Munoz named Daily Times co-athletes of the month
FARMINGTON — Bryson Valdez and Makayla Munoz, both still unbeaten on the mat, are already primed for state wrestling title runs after dismantling tough foes in recent days.
The Aztec duo, which earned Daily Times co-athlete of the month honors in May, has amassed a combined 32 victories so far in this condensed campaign.
Munoz already has quality victories over Moriarty’s Caia Kamplain and La Cueva’s Nicole Woisin, putting both away within the first 80 seconds en route to the District 1 girls title at La Cueva.
Valdez again outlasted Rhys Sellers of Miyamura to win back-to-back District 1-4A titles on Saturday. Valdez pulled ahead for good with two key takedowns in the corners.
Piedra Vista softball’s Emma Lovato
After enduring a rough outing, allowing nine runs off 12 hits against Rio Rancho, PV pitcher Emma Lovato responded with a strong 7 2/3-inning outing at Cleveland. Although it was a no-decision, Lovato gave up just three runs and striking out nine batters.
Kirtland Central baseball’s Ethan Yazzie
Ethan Yazzie has strung together multi-hit outings in all seven games played so far this month. He also has seven stolen bases since May 11.
Aztec wrestling’s Caleb Varzeas
Caleb Varzeas remains unbeaten at 19-0 entering the state wrestling tournament.
Varzeas coasted to a District 1-4A title bumping up to the 285-pound division, pinning Kirtland’s Ben Decker in 40 second and pinning Shiprock’s Jaylon Begay in 80 seconds.
