LAS CRUCES – Sources within New Mexico State confirmed to the Las Cruces Sun-News on Monday that Aggies head coach Chris Jans is receiving interest for the head coaching position at East Tennessee State.

The Buccaneers are in search of a new man to take the helm after Steve Forbes accepted the head coaching spot at Wake Forest last Thursday. ETSU's interim coach, Jason Shay, is also said to be in contention for the position.

Hero Sports initially listed Jans as a candidate, while KTSM's Colin Deaver was the first local reporter to receive confirmation.

Jans is entering his fourth season as New Mexico State's shot caller. He boasts an 83-17 record during that stretch and is the three-time WAC Coach of the Year.

The Fairbank, Iowa, native is currently on a contract that runs through the 2022-2023 season with an annual base salary of $290,000 and a yearly retention bonus of $216,000.

ETSU is in a position to offer a significant raise for Jans' services. For context, Forbes agreed to a deal with the Buccaneers in 2018 that featured an annual base salary of $400,000 and a yearly retention bonus of $200,000.

The team went 30-4 (16-2 Southern Conference) last season and booked its ticket to the NCAA tournament for the second time in the last four years.
