Former Burges volleyball player Savannah Marenco took the junior college route to better her game and possibly earn her way to a Division I program.

Through two years at Odessa College, a two-year school in Odessa, Texas, Marenco has had plenty of success. As a freshman, she was a regular contributor and had double-digit kills against Wharton JC, Frank Phillips JC and Laredo College.

The Odessa team is ranked No. 2 in the nation in the National Junior College Athletic Association and is 21-2 on the season.

This year, Marenco has been a key contributor on defense and offense with 174 digs and 145 kills.

"Going the junior college route was perfect for me," Marenco said. "I've been able to grow as a player and I've learned so much. I believe my overall game has improved. In high school I was a hitter and setter, but in college I don't set and that's fine. I've really been able to work on being a better hitter and all-around player on defense."

Savannah Marenco, 7, of Burges reaches to keep the ball alive during a volley against Jefferson during a game in 2018. The Mustangs prevailed over the Foxes in three sets.

The 5-foot-10 Marenco, was an El Paso Times' All-City selection in high school, has had several big matches this year with 13 kills vs. Garden City Community College and 11 matches with double-digit digs.

"Savannah has really grown into a strong leader this season," Odessa College coach Kristi Gray said. "She's been more vocal and she keeps getting better all the time for us. I've been impressed with her play at both hitter and in the back row. Savannah has a great knowledge of the game and is very athletic."

Savannah Marenco of Burges passes from the back during a bi-district game against Eastlake in 2017.

The success of the Odessa College volleyball team has been special.

"Being a part of something special here has had an effect on me," Marenco said . "I've had great support from the team, from the school and I'm close to home. My family has been amazing for me. I believe we have the potential to win the national title. We have our eyes set on that."

Marenco would also like to play Division I volleyball at the University of New Mexico in large part because her brother Alec, will be a freshman on the football team next fall after signing with the Lobos.

"I've long wanted to play college sports wherever my brother is," Marenco said. "I've had some contact with UNM and I just hope it work outs. Right now I have the opportunity to return to Odessa College next season and I plan to do that. Recruiting has been affected due to the pandemic and with athletes getting an extra year at their school, I plan to take advantage. I'm excited for the future in this sport, I feel really good about where I am at and what the future holds."
