San Juan County, Navajo Nation COVID-19 case updates for July 2021

It's official, July 1 marked the end of the state's color-coded system of COVID-19 restrictions as the state reached the targeted 60% vaccination level.

COVID-19 case levels, which began dropping in last week of May, continued to decline through June although hospitalization rates stayed at about 75 patients a day most days during the last weeks of June. On July 14 there were 97 people under treatment at New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections.

While statewide case counts bumped up in early July San Juan County's rates have fallen.

ZIP Codes in San Juan County made frequent appearances among the state's top 10 places with the highest new case numbers. But those overall new case numbers are still dropping and, mid-month, San Juan County ZIP Codes had dropped out of the counts.

On July 14 the county's pandemic death toll reached 500 with the death of an unidentified man in his 40s who health officials said was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

A news release from the governor's office on July 1 stated that 62% of eligible New Mexicans have had all of the necessary shots as of Tuesday and nearly 71 percent have received at least one vaccine dose.

“Our push to get every eligible New Mexican vaccinated is not over,” Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said in the release. “If you haven’t yet ensured that you are protected, please get vaccinated – don’t risk dangerous new variants that present incredible risk to those who are unvaccinated. Vaccines are safe, effective, and easy to get – find shots near you at vaccineNM.org.”

Are you in the lottery?

The governor, the New Mexico Department of Health and the New Mexico Lottery launched a statewide vaccination incentive program called, "Vax 2 the Max Sweepstakes."

The program will make available $10 million in total prize money and other prizes to New Mexicans who receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

To be eligible for the cash sweepstakes, residents who receive or have received the vaccine must opt in to register and verify their personal and vaccination information at vax2themaxnm.org.

The next $1 million drawing is scheduled for Friday, July 2; vaccinated New Mexicans had to opt in to the sweepstakes by 6 p.m. Thursday, July 1, to be eligible for the July 2 drawing.

Updates for Friday, July 30

11:05 p.m.: Organizers of the 2021 Navajo Nation Fair have canceled the event due to the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus.

The Navajo Nation Fair Office, along with the tribe's Department of Agriculture and Division of Natural Resources, announced the cancelation in a notice posted on July 29 on the Agriculture Department's Facebook page.

"With the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and variants, it is our highest priority to keep our Diné people safe for many generations," the notice states.

It continues, "with guidance from the Office of the Navajo Nation President and Vice President, it is important to understand an event of this magnitude attracts people from across the world and could impact the health and safety of our beloved children, parents and grandparents."

The fair takes place in Window Rock, Arizona and features events such as the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Native rodeos, carnival, parade, Miss Navajo Nation competition, song and dance, powwow and Native food vendors.

This is the second year the fair has been canceled, but organizers look forward to its return in 2022.

On July 21, the Office of Miss Navajo Nation revealed the names of the four contestants in this year's pageant, which will take place virtually from Sept. 6 through Sept. 10 and will stream on Facebook and YouTube.

5:30 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center report today 26 new cases of COVID-19 and no recent virus-related deaths.

The total number of cases is 31,377 while the death toll is 1,374.

The three agencies have been disclosing case numbers since the start of the pandemic from the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS:

There are 29,882 individuals who are considered recovered from the virus. A total of 290,438 tests have been conducted.

Tribal President Jonathan Nez called the Delta variant a "growing threat" in areas surrounding the tribal land.

"If you travel off the nation, keep wearing your masks even if others aren't. As Navajo people, we have to be an example for others on and off our nation," Nez said.

He added, "our health care experts continue to urge all eligible people to get fully vaccinated for COVID-19 as soon as possible. The vaccines are highly effective in preventing severe illness and death if you contract the virus. So please be safe and continue to make good decisions that keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy."

5:17 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 331 new COVID-19 cases in the state on Friday, 10 of those in San Juan County.

The New Mexico Department of Health reported two more deaths on Friday related to COVID-19:

A man in his 60s from Valencia County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.
A man in his 50s from Lea County whose death happened more than 30 days ago but was just recorded as due to COVID-19.

The number of COVID-19-related deaths among New Mexico residents rose to 4,410 on Friday.

On Friday there were 148 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections.

There are 196,851 people once diagnosed with COVID-19 in New Mexico who have recovered, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

The Department of Health has identified at least one positive COVID-19 case in residents and/or staff in the past 28 days at the following long-term care facilities in San Juan County:

4:57 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 13 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation and one recent death on July 29, according to a news release by the Office of the President and Vice President.

The pandemic has claimed 1,374 lives on the tribal lands.

There have been 29,867 recoveries from COVID-19, the release stated, and 290,396

COVID-19 tests were administrated.

"The overall total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 31,351, including one delayed reported case," the release said.

3:35 p.m.: San Juan County reported a substantial increase in the number of COVID-19 cases for July 29 from the day before, increasing from 16 to 51 cases in 24 hours.

The New Mexico Department of Health reported 401 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, a jump from 329 cases on July 28.

One new death was reported Thursday by state health officials.

A male in his 80s from Bernalillo County.

The number of COVID-19-related deaths among New Mexico residents reached 4,408 on Thursday; 503 of those fatalities were residents of San Juan County.

New Mexico has reported a total of 210,085 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, 15,999 of those in San Juan County.

There were 140 people in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections on Thursday.

As of Thursday, there were 196,786 people once diagnosed with COVID-19 who have recovered, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

5:02 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 14 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation and no recent deaths, according to a news release by the Office of the President and Vice President.

The pandemic has claimed 1,373 lives on the tribal lands.

There have been 29,859 recoveries from COVID-19, the release stated, and 289,930 COVID-19 tests were given.

"The overall total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 31,337, including one delayed reported case," the release said.

A man in his 50s from Lea County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions. His death happened more than 30 days ago but was just reported.
A woman in her 70s from Bernalillo County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

5:15 p.m.: Health officials for the Navajo Nation report today 15 new COVID-19 cases and one more death related to the virus.

The report states that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated guidance today, recommending that fully vaccinated people wear face masks indoors in areas that have substantial and high transmission rates of COVID-19 and the Delta variant.

"The CDC issued new guidance for mask wearing today, but here on the Navajo Nation our mask mandate has remained in place since April of last year. Wearing masks and getting fully vaccinated are highly effective in reducing the spread of COVID-19 and the variants, and keeping ourselves safe and healthy," tribal President Jonathan Nez said.

6:09 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 632 new COVID-19 infections between Saturday, July 24, and Monday, July 26, 32 of them in San Juan County.

The state also reported three more deaths:

A man in his 80s from Taos County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.
A woman in her 50s from Valencia County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.
A man in his 30s from McKinley County who had underlying conditions. The man died more than 30 days ago but his death was reported Monday as being related to COVID-19.

The pandemic has claimed 4,400 New Mexico residents since it began.

New Mexico has reported 209,118 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, 15,929 of them in San Juan County.

There were 89 people under treatment in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections on Monday.

"Mask up and get fully vaccinated. The Delta variant is in our communities and all across the country. Our best defense and most effective way of pushing back on the variants is to get fully vaccinated," tribal President Jonathan Nez said.

"The large majority of new cases and deaths involve people who are not vaccinated. If you visit loved ones who do not live in the same household, please wear a mask and take precautions. We are not out of the pandemic. Please be safe and continue to take precautions," Nez added.

Updates for Sunday, July 25

3:41 p.m.: The Navajo Nation on Sunday reported six new COVID-19 cases and four additional deaths.

The latest numbers brought the total number of coronavirus-related cases to 31,297 since the pandemic began more than a year ago.

The number of known deaths rose to 1,372.

On Saturday, the tribe had reported four new cases and no deaths for the sixth time in a seven days.

The Navajo Nation recently relaxed restrictions to allow visitors to travel on the reservation and visit popular attractions like Canyon de Chelly and Monument Valley.

While cases are down, Navajo leaders are urging residents to continue wearing masks and get vaccinated.

“The Delta variant is the dominant strain in every part of the country and it continues to spread in our communities as well,” tribal President Jonathan Nez said in a statement. “Reports indicate that the Delta variant is 60-percent more transmissible and can lead to more severe symptoms and death.”

The pandemic has claimed 4,394 New Mexico residents, 502 of them from San Juan County. There have been 208,243 cases across the state, 15,885 of those in San Juan County.

There were 98 people hospitalized in New Mexico due to COVID-19 on July 22.

6:05 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, along with the Navajo Area Indian Health Service and the Navajo Epidemiology Center, report 21 new COVID-19 cases today.

"We have the knowledge, guidance and resources to push back on COVID-19 and the Delta variant, but it ultimately comes down to our individual choices and actions each day. Whether we wear a mask or not, whether we travel to hotspots or not, and whether we get vaccinated or not," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

"The data across the country shows the devastating impacts of the Delta variant in regions where vaccination rates are low. States and counties where a small percentage of people are vaccinated have rising numbers of new infections, hospitalizations and deaths," Nez said.

He added that wearing face masks is required on the Navajo Nation.

There were no additional virus-related deaths reported by the health agencies. The total number of cases is 31,239 and the death toll is 1,366.

There are 29,759 individuals who are considered recovered from the virus while a total of 287,686 tests have been conducted.

Updates for Tuesday, July 20

6:15 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center report today 17 additional COVID-19 cases and no recent virus-related deaths for the Navajo Nation.

The update states the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported today that 83% of new COVID-19 infections in the United States are because of the Delta variant.

"The surge in new cases in almost all states across the country is very concerning for the Navajo Nation. We've done so much to bring our numbers down and now with the growing number of Delta variant cases, it's more important than ever to get fully vaccinated. Reports also indicate that the majority of hospitalizations and deaths are those individuals who are not vaccinated for COVID-19," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

The three health agencies have been disclosing case numbers from the eight service units since last year under the Navajo Area IHS:

4:38 p.m.: State health officials on Tuesday reported 137 new COVID-19 cases in New Mexico, one from San Juan County, raising the state’s total since the start of the pandemic to 207,701 cases.

The state also reported four more deaths related to COVID-19. One was a recent death:

A man in his 60s from San Juan County who had underlying conditions.

The other three deaths that were reported on Tuesday happened more than 30 days ago:

A woman in her 60s from Lea County who had underlying conditions.

"The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky recently stated that this is becoming a pandemic of the unvaccinated. The data across the country shows that the large majority of new positive COVID-19 cases are those individuals who are not fully vaccinated," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

He added, "the COVID-19 vaccines are highly effective, not guaranteed, but they are effective. We have a very high vaccination rate here on the Navajo Nation, but we have to do more to encourage more of our people to get fully vaccinated. We also have to continue to take precautions such as wearing a mask in public and being very cautious in public. We are in this together and we have to keep supporting one another and keep praying."

4:41 p.m.: State health officials Monday reported 378 new COVID-19 cases in New Mexico over the three-day reporting period spanning July 17 through July 19, and four more deaths.

Of the new cases, 33 were reported in San Juan County, which has seen 15,848 cases total and 501 deaths.

There have been 207,566 cases recorded statewide since the pandemic began.

The number of COVID-19-related deaths among New Mexicans rose to 4,383 on Monday.

12:18 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies on Sunday reported 17 new COVID-19 positive cases were recorded on Saturday, and 13 on Sunday, according to a news release from the Office of the President and Vice President.

Two more deaths, which were recorded on Saturday, were announced Sunday.

The pandemic has claimed the lives of 1,366 people on the Navajo Nation since it began. A full report will be available on Monday, the news release said.

7:24 p.m.: New Mexico health officials on Thursday reported155 new COVID-19 cases, including six in San Juan County.

The Department of Health also reported 10 more COVID-19-related deaths on Thursday, including a man in his 70s from San Juan County who had been hospitalized.

The number of COVID-19-related deaths among New Mexicans rose to 4,372 on July 15. The pandemic’s toll in San Juan County climbed to 501 on July 15.

6:52 p.m.: The Navajo Nation saw 16 new cases of COVID-19 and one additional death related to the virus today.

According to the update by health officials, the total number of cases is 31,132 and includes nine where delayed reporting occurred. The death toll is 1,362.

"Our contact tracers indicate that some of the new cases are directly related to travel off the Navajo Nation, in which individuals attended large public events in large cities then returned home and spread the virus to their family members," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

He added, "we have to do better and keep pushing back on COVID-19 and Delta variant by getting more of our people fully vaccinated and wearing masks in public. Our health care workers are fighting for us every day, so think of them and their families who are making sacrifices to save lives. 4:18 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center reported today 13 new COVID-19 cases for the Navajo Nation.

The agencies did not report any additional deaths related to the virus.

A full breakdown on cases and in which IHS service unit will be available on July 12 but the death toll for the tribe remains at 1,358.

"The Delta variant has created surges in COVID-19 infections in several states including Utah and Arizona. We are not out of this pandemic, but our public health experts have given us the necessary guidance to keep ourselves safe including getting vaccinated and continuing to wear a mask in public. If you travel off the Navajo Nation, wear a mask in public. We have to continue to be very cautious and push back on this virus," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in the press release from his office.

Updates for Friday, July 9

11:17 p.m.: The Navajo Nation reported 14 new cases of the COVID-19 on Friday and one recent death.

The figures released by the Navajo Department of Health bring the total number of cases on the reservation to 31,081 since the pandemic began. The death toll is 1,358.

The Navajo Nation recently relaxed restrictions to allow visitors to travel on the reservation and visit popular attractions like Antelope Canyon and Monument Valley.

While cases are down, Navajo leaders are urging residents to continue wearing masks and get vaccinated.

"The numbers of COVID-19 cases are rising in the Four Corners states, especially in Arizona and Utah," said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez. "If you travel off the Navajo Nation, we strongly urge you to wear a mask in public at all times. The Delta variant is now the dominant strain across the country, and it has been reported here on the Navajo Nation as well. Personal responsibility is the key to staying safe and reducing the spread of the variants."

11:08 p.m.: New Mexico state health officials announced 125 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, including four in San Juan County.

The Department of Health also reported one new death in New Mexico related to COVID-19, a man in his 60s from Torrance County who had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

6:25 p.m.: The Navajo Nation saw a bump in new COVID-19 infections with 24 new cases reported today by health officials.

"The Navajo Department of Health reported that the increase in new infections reported on Thursday is due to family cluster cases related to recent travel to Las Vegas," the press release from the Office of the President and Vice President states.

Contact tracers are continuing their investigation to determine the extent of exposures and to determine if the individuals had been vaccinated, according to the release.

"This serves as a strong reminder that the variants, including the dominant Delta variant, continue to pose a threat. We need to be very cautious and always wear a mask when you travel on or off the Navajo Nation and when you visit family members who live in separate households. The data across the country shows that states with lower vaccination rates are now having surges in new cases of COVID-19," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the release.

"Today, we signed a resolution lifting certain restrictions that will allow parks and schools to reopen under safety protocols and requirements. We've had consistent low numbers of COVID-19 infections and lower numbers of deaths over the last few months, but we are not out of the pandemic yet," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

He added, "we remain cautiously optimistic that the worst of the pandemic is behind us, but we have to continue to keep our guard up and to get more of our people fully vaccinated. Please remember that the mask mandate is still in place for the entire Navajo Nation, including visitors and tourists. Please continue to take precautions and stay safe as we move forward."

4:23 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 11 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation – four on Sunday and seven on Monday, according to a news release from the Office of the President and Vice President.

One new death was also reported on Sunday.

The number of deaths related to COVID-19 infections reached 1,357 as of Monday. New COVID-19 cases and deaths were not reported on Monday due to the July 4 holiday, the news release said.

Navajo Nation on Saturday reported five new COVID-19 cases and two more deaths.

A statement released by tribal officials said the additional deaths increased the tribe's pandemic death toll to 1,356.

The statement did not provide an updated count of total cases among residents of the sprawling reservation that includes parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.

Tribal officials did not immediately respond to a query but a statement released Friday by the tribe had said that the number of positive cases stood at 31,012.

"Reporting of new COVID-19 cases will resume on Monday, due to the Fourth of July holiday on Sunday," a release from the Office of the President and Vice President stated.

2:22 p.m.: A mobile team from Northern Navajo Medical Center will administer COVID-19 vaccine doses before the fireworks show this evening in Shiprock.

The team will make their way from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. through the main parking area for the drive-up fireworks show at the Northern Navajo Nation Fairgrounds, according to the Shiprock Indian Health Service Facebook page.

The Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be offered. Vaccines are available to people 12 and over. Minors ages 12-18 need to be with a responsible adult.

"If you have some young people in your family who have not had their COVID vaccination yet, or friends and family who need their first or second shot, bring them along to see the fireworks … and to get their shot," the post states.

According to a July 1 press release from the Office of the President and Vice President, the Navajo Nation Fair Office is coordinating fireworks show in Shiprock and in Tuba City, Window Rock and Chinle in Arizona to encourage families to stay local for the holiday weekend.

"Remaining on the Navajo Nation during the holiday weekend allows us to continue pushing back on COVID-19 and the Delta variant, which continues to spread in other regions and states across the country. 5:05 p.m.: The Navajo Nation saw four new cases of COVID-19 and no additional deaths in today's report from health officials.

"For over one year, our health care experts have given us the tools and guidance needed to protect ourselves and others from COVID-19. Everyone has a personal responsibility to continue taking precautions and keeping themselves safe. We are encouraging all Navajo Nation residents to stay local this holiday weekend due to the growing spread of the Delta variants in regions off the Navajo Nation," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

4 p.m.: State health officials reported 87 new COVID-19 cases in New Mexico on Thursday and three recent deaths:

A man in his 40s from Bernalillo County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.
A man in his 60s from Rio Arriba County who had been hospitalized.
A man in his 70s from Bernalillo County who had underlying conditions. This death occurred more than 30 days ago, but was not recorded as a COVID-19-related death until Thursday.

The number of COVID-19-related deaths among New Mexico residents reached 4,343 on Thursday.

The state has reported a total of 205,629 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic.

San Juan County has reported 15,740 cases since the pandemic began and 497 deaths.

There are 72 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals on Thursday due to COVID-19 infections.

Also on Thursday, there were 194,605 COVID-19 people once diagnosed with COVID-19 who have recovered, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.
