San Juan County, Navajo Nation COVID-19 case updates for June 2021

On June 18 the governor announced that the color-coded system of COVID-19 restrictions would end soon as the state reached the targeted 60% vaccination level. San Juan County remains in the Turquoise Level on the COVID-19 restrictions map for New Mexico until the map is retired on July 1.

COVID-19 case levels began dropping in last week of May and continued a decline through the first two weeks of June.

San Juan County ranked ninth among the top 10 counties in the state to achieve high vaccination rates. Here are the rankings quoted from the state news release of May 18:

As of June 14, New Mexico counties with the best rate of individuals that have completed their vaccination series, and helped pull the state to the 60 percent mark, are:

• Los Alamos County: 81.5 percent

• McKinley County: 77.9 percent

• Taos County: 69.7 percent

• Rio Arriba: 67.5 percent

• Santa Fe County: 67 percent

• Sandoval County: 65.6 percent

• Cibola County: 64.2 percent

• Bernalillo County: 62.2 percent

• San Juan County: 61.7 percent

• Guadalupe County: 60.9 percent

As of June 14, the New Mexico counties with the worst completed vaccination rates, and where risk of infection and illness are thus highest, are:

• Roosevelt County: 28.3 percent

• Curry County: 34.4 percent

• Torrance County: 35.5 percent

• Eddy County: 35.7 percent

• Quay County: 37.2 percent

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, the New Mexico Department of Health and the New Mexico Lottery launched a statewide vaccination incentive program called, "Vax 2 the Max Sweepstakes."

The program will make available $10 million in total prize money and other prizes to New Mexicans who receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

To be eligible for the cash sweepstakes, residents who receive or have received the vaccine must opt in to register and verify their personal and vaccination information at vax2themaxnm.org.

Updates for Wednesday, June 30

6:05 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center reported six new COVID-19 cases and two more deaths related to the virus.

Today's update brings the total number of cases is 31,004 and the death toll is 1,354.

The health agencies have been disclosing case numbers since March 2020 from the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS:

3:40 p.m.: The COVID-19-related death toll among New Mexico residents rose to 4,340 on Wednesday.

New Mexico state health officials on Wednesday reported 66 new COVID-19 cases and two recent deaths:

• A woman in her 80s from Otero County who had underlying conditions.

• A man in his 40s from Curry County who had underlying conditions. His death happened more than 30 days ago.

“COVID-related deaths are reported when a death certificate has been issued and some death certificates are delayed due to insufficient information,” health officials noted in a news release Wednesday.

Statewide, 205,542 cases have been reported since the start of the pandemic, 15,730 of them in San Juan County. The county has reported 497 deaths.

As of Wednesday there were 64 people hospitalized in New Mexico due to COVID-19 infections.

On Wednesday there were 194,553 COVID-19 patients previously diagnosed with the disease who have recovered, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

11 p.m.: Health officials for the Navajo Nation reported today three new cases of COVID-19.

There were no additional virus-related deaths in the update.

4:51 p.m.: State health officials reported 52 new COVID-19 cases in New Mexico on Tuesday and two recent deaths:

• A man in his 80s from Bernalillo County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

• A woman in her 90s from Doña Ana County who had underlying conditions.

Seven new cases were reported in San Juan County, which has seen 15,720 new cases and 497 deaths since the pandemic began. Statewide there have been 205,484 cases and 4,338 deaths related to the virus. As of Tuesday, there were 194,474 people who had been diagnosed with COVID-19 in New Mexico and who have recovered, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

There were 75 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals on Tuesday due to COVID-19.

"As we approach the Fourth of July holiday, we are urging our Navajo Nation residents to celebrate safely and closer to home with friends and family. Yes, we are making good progress and our numbers of new infections have remained low, but we must remain diligent because the delta variant continues to spread in other regions and states across the country. Based on the data and the trends, it is much safer to remain here on the Navajo Nation at this time until we see a decline in new infections outside of our nation," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

4:01 p.m.: State health officials reported 148 new COVID-19 cases between June 26 and June 28 and no recent deaths.

New Mexico has reported total of 205,438 cases since the pandemic began. The number of deaths among New Mexico residents due to COVID-19 has reached 4,336.

San Juan County had an average of six new COVID-19 cases per day over the state’s three-day weekend reporting period, and no new deaths. San Juan County has recorded 15,714 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic and 497 deaths.

The death of a Chaves County woman in her 60s, which happened more than 30 days ago, was also reported on June 28. She had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions, according to a news release from the New Mexico Department of Health.

There were 75 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals June 28 due to COVID-19. As of June 28 194,392 COVID-19 patients previously diagnosed with the virus have recovered, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

Update for Saturday, June 26

7:30 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, in partnership with other health agencies, reported today eight new cases of COVID-19.

The update listed four more virus-related deaths, raising the death toll to 1,352.

"Please remain mindful that we have several COVID-19 variants on the Navajo Nation, including the delta variant. The good news is that the health care experts state that the vaccines are effective against the variants. Many of the new infections across the country are individuals who have not been fully vaccinated. If you know of a loved one or friend who has not received the vaccine, please encourage them to do so in order to help protect everyone. We are in this together, so please continue to be cautious," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

11 p.m.: There won't be any more state reports on COVID-19 statistics until Monday afternoon, so here's a full rundown on numbers of infections and recoveries across New Mexico as of Friday.

State health officials reported 76 new COVID-19 cases on Friday and the death of an Eddy County resident who was in her 60s. She had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

San Juan County, which has seen 15,696 cases and 497 deaths since the pandemic began, reported five new cases on Friday and no deaths.

The number of COVID-19-related deaths among New Mexico residents grew to 4,335 on Friday.

There were 71 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections on Friday.

Also, as of Friday, there are 194,015 COVID-19 patients who have recovered from COVID-19 infections since the pandemic began, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

7:04 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health reported on Friday the first confirmed case of the delta variant of COVID-19 for the Navajo Nation.

According to the Office of the President and Vice President, which releases daily updates about COVID-19 cases and related deaths, the sample was obtained in the northern region of the tribal land.

The delta variant, first detected in India, is more transmissible and can cause more severe illness, the release states.

"We have several variants on the Navajo Nation and now we have the delta variant identified in our communities. This should encourage more of our people to get fully vaccinated to push back on the severity of the variants," tribal President Jonathan Nez said.

The report today listed three new cases of the virus and no additional deaths. The total number of cases is 30,979 while the death toll is 1,348.

The number of COVID-19 deaths among New Mexicans is rose to 4,334 on Thursday.

Statewide there have been 205,215 cases reported.

There were 68 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals on Thursday due to COVID-19 infections.

One death related to the virus was included in the report. The total number of cases is 30,972 and the death toll is 1,347.

Health officials have been disclosing case numbers since the pandemic started from the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS:

5:58 p.m.: State health officials announced 264 new COVID-19 cases on Monday tallied during a three-day weekend reporting period. Ten new deaths related to COVID-19 were also announced between June 19 and June 21.

San Juan County reported 15 new cases over the three-day span.

Among the 10 people reported dead were two San Juan County residents:

• A woman in her 70s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

• A man in his 80s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported six new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation and three new deaths.

The pandemic has claimed 1,346 lives on the Navajo Nation as of June 19.

A news release from the Office of the President and Vice President said a full report on updated COVID-19 statistics will be available on Monday.

“We are in this together, so please take precautions and wear a mask in order to protect yourselves and others,” Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in the news release. “If you or a loved one has not been vaccinated, please make arrangements to receive the vaccine to help keep everyone safe. Our goal is community immunity, but we need more people to get vaccinated to reach that goal. Please be safe this weekend as you celebrate Father’s Day. We wish all of our Navajo people an enjoyable and safe time with family.”

11:30 p.m.: The Navajo Nation reported 11 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday no additional deaths.

The sprawling reservation that stretches into New Mexico, Arizona and Utah has seen 30,959 known cases of the coronavirus since the pandemic began and 1,343 deaths.

The Navajo Department of Health on Friday lifted the nation's stay-at-home order, easing restrictions to allow in-person meetings and ceremonies of 25 people or fewer and drive-thru gatherings of up to 100 vehicles. Face masks are required by everyone, whether or not they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer on Friday vetoed a resolution to reopen parks on the nation, including parks that encompass Monument Valley and Antelope Canyon, to 100% capacity.

Nez and Lizer said in a letter to the Navajo Nation Council that the nation needs to be careful with variants of the disease still circulating. They said that rather than opening the parks to full capacity, opening to 50% capacity would allow officials to monitor the impacts of reopening and gradually increase capacity from there.

Nez and Lizer requested that the council hold a special session to repeal a March 2020 order closing roads to visitors and free the health department to issue a new order.

5:08 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 12 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation Thursday and one new death.

The pandemic's death toll rose to 1,343, which includes one death the reporting of which was delayed. Records indicate that 29,555 individuals recovered from COVID-19. There have been 278,551 COVID-19 tests given.

The total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 30,948, according to a press release from the Office of the President and Vice President.

“As we approach the Father’s Day holiday, we ask all of our Navajo people to remain diligent and to be cautious as you celebrate this special occasion this Sunday," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in the release. "The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now considers the COVID-19 Delta strain, also known as B.1.617.2, as a 'variant of concern' due to its growing spread around the world. Researchers suggest that the Delta variant, which was first identified in the country of India, is even more transmissible and may cause more severe illness than other variants. Currently, here on the Navajo Nation, we have no confirmed cases of the Delta variant but it is present in other areas of this country so that is a concern for our region," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

His office will hold an online town hall to provide more updates on June 16 at 10 a.m. on the Nez-Lizer Facebook page.

Two COVID vaccine clinics in Shiprock

Northern Navajo Medical Center will have two COVID-19 vaccination events on June 16 and June 17. Both events will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Shiprock High School.

"Due to the hot weather conditions, the vaccine events will be held inside the air-conditioned high school. Entrance is through the east entrance near the Chieftain Pit," the press release states.

The release states that everyone will be allowed inside the building with social distancing and wearing face masks. Household members and family groups may remain together.

4:45 p.m.: The New Mexico Department of Health reported 122 new cases of COVID-19 today.

The Farmington area's 87401 ZIP code was on the statewide list for the 10 locations with the most cases.

4:35 p.m.: The New Mexico Department of Health reported 130 new COVID-19 cases on June 11 for the state.

Updates for Thursday, June 10

5:50 p.m.: Nine new cases of COVID-19 were reported today by health officials for the Navajo Nation, according to a press release from the Office of the President and Vice President.

The release states that tribal President Jonathan Nez and Navajo Area Indian Health Service Director Roselyn Tso visited today the COVID-19 vaccination site at Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock.

During the visit, Nez received a report that showed 97% of those 75 years or older in the Shiprock Service Unit have been fully vaccinated as of June 8.

The document also showed that as of June 8, 71% of people 16 years and older and 34% of adolescents between 12 and 15 years old have been fully vaccinated.

"COVID-related deaths are reported when a death certificate has been issued and some death certificates are delayed due to insufficient information," the update states.

The number of residents who have died related to the virus is now 4,295.

The department's update states that a female younger than 10 years old and a man in his 60s have died. Both had been hospitalized. The death toll for the state is now 4,286.

Health officials report new cases and no recent deaths for Navajo Nation

Three new cases of COVID-19 were reported today for the Navajo Nation by health officials. There were no recent deaths reported.

Update for Sunday, June 6

5:15 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center reported today seven additional cases of COVID-19 for the Navajo Nation.

One more death related to the virus was reported as well. The latest number raises the death toll to 1,333.

A full report will be available on June 7, according to the Office of the President and Vice President. The office released today's update.

"Our vaccination rate on the Navajo Nation is gradually increasing, but we can and should do better. There are still a substantial percentage of eligible individuals who have not received the vaccine," tribal President Jonathan Nez said. "If you or a loved one has not been vaccinated for COVID-19, please do your best to encourage them and inform them of the effectiveness of the vaccines."

Tribal Vice President Myron Lizer echoed the president's sentiment.

"The IHS and 638 health care facilities on the Navajo Nation offer many opportunities to receive the vaccines through their drive-thru events or by appointment. Please consider getting vaccinated to help keep us all safe and healthy," Lizer said.

Update for Saturday, June 5

7 p.m.: Seven new cases of COVID-19 and one virus-related death have been reported today by health officials for the Navajo Nation.

The update was released by the Office of the President and Vice President, which stated a full report will be available on June 7.

The release states that there were two deaths that were not immediately reported. Together, there have been 1,332 people who have died due to the virus.

"Working together, we have to keep pushing back on COVID-19 and encouraging our loved ones to get vaccinated to protect us all," tribal President Jonathan Nez said. "In order to reach our goal of herd immunity, we need more of our people, including adolescents, to receive the vaccine."

Health care facilities on and near the tribal land continue to offer COVID-19 vaccines at drive-thru events or by appointment, the release states.

4:45 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and partnering health agencies reported 13 new cases of COVID-19 with four more deaths on June 3.

"Community immunity is our focus right now. We need more of our Navajo Nation residents to get vaccinated to improve our chances of reaching herd immunity. The more people we have vaccinated the lesser risk for us all. Please consider getting vaccinated if you haven't already. Be safe and keep praying for our people," tribal Vice President Myron Lizer said in the update released by his office.

Tribal President Jonathan Nez accompanied his 13-year-old son, Christopher, as he received his second dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at the Gallup Indian Medical Center vaccine site on Thursday, according to the press release.

6:30 p.m.: New Mexico saw 92 new cases of COVID-19 in today's update by state health officials.

In San Juan County, there were 13 new cases. The recently reported cases bring the state's tally to 203,222.

The New Mexico Department of Health's update listed four recent deaths related to the virus. Those residents were from Bernalillo, Curry, Doña Ana and McKinley counties. There have been 4,268 residents who have died because of the virus.

Six new cases added to Navajo Nation's case tally

The Navajo Department of Health and partnering health agencies reported six new cases of COVID-19 and no recent deaths today.

"Community immunity is the goal and it will take more of our Navajo people getting vaccinated to reach that goal. We have well over half of our adult population fully vaccinated, but we want to get at least 75% of the eligible population fully vaccinated as soon as possible," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update released by his office.

The president and vice president's office will provide an update about the virus at 10 a.m. on June 3 on the Nez-Lizer Facebook page.

"We are hopeful that we will not have a large surge in new COVID-19 cases as a result of the Memorial Day weekend, but we may see some new cases in the coming days. Please do not be discouraged if our numbers increase. Keep pushing back on the virus by taking precautions and getting the vaccine," Vice President Myron Lizer said.

Updates for Tuesday, June 1

9:50 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, in collaboration with the Navajo Epidemiology Center and Navajo Area Indian Health Service, reported today no new cases of COVID-19 for the Navajo Nation.

There were no additional deaths in today's update, which was released by the Office of the President and Vice President.

A full report by the health agencies will be available on June 2, according to the update.

"We are seeing good progress, but there is likely a delay in reporting new cases due to the holiday weekend. I thank all of our health care workers and frontline warriors for working through the Memorial Day weekend to keep our people safe," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in a statement.

6:05 p.m.: State health officials on Tuesday reported 381 additional cases of COVID-19 since the last report on May 28. The update includes 54 new cases in San Juan County.

The New Mexico Department of Health reported two more deaths related to the virus. The individuals were from Bernalillo County and Lea County, bringing the number of deaths of New Mexico residents to 4,264.

There are 105 individuals hospitalized for the virus in the state as of today. There are 189,692 cases designated by the Department of Health as having recovered.
