COVID-19: Case updates for the Navajo Nation and San Juan County in May 2021

Friday, April 30, marked the day that San Juan County returned to Green Level state restrictions after New Mexico health officials changed the formula used for determining when counties can relax restrictions on certain businesses and events, and at what level of occupancy.

On May 5 San Juan County graduated to Turquoise Status, allowing more people to attend "mass gatherings" and many venues to expand seating areas for customers indoors. A list of Turquoise Level restrictions is included in the May 5 blog entry below.)

Allen Theatres announced plans to reopen its E. 20th Street location on May 7, and high school sports teams welcomed fans at 25 percent indoor occupancy starting April 30. Colleges and high schools planned for graduations and a complex web of rules about when masks should be worn was announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention adopted by the state soon after.

In another sign of recovery, the Animas River Jam festival will run from noon to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 29 and noon to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 30 at venues in Berg Park and Animas Park in Farmington. The event features music as well as food stands and replaces the annual River Fest. Organizers hope for smaller crowds than the more extensive River Fest drew and that those attendees will practice social distancing.

As of April 30, the number of COVID-19-related deaths among New Mexico residents had reached 4,067. Statewide there were 197,733 cases reported since the pandemic began. San Juan County has reported 14,514 cases and 468 deaths since the pandemic began. On April 30 the county logged 39 new cases. The previous day it logged 56 cases.

COVID-19 cases spiked in San Juan County in April, as San Juan and Bernalillo counties continued to report much higher case numbers than other New Mexico counties. Despite that, both counties moved into the green Level April 30 as vaccination rates were factored into the mix.

Vaccination campaigns continue for both New Mexico and Navajo Nation residents. The state announced that inoculations will be open for all residents aged 16 and older back on April 5 and now free weekly vaccination clinics are held at McGee Park and San Juan College. Health officials advise that people who are vaccinated should continue wearing masks and practicing social distancing.

Update for Monday, May 31

The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center reported on May 31 two new cases of COVID-19 for the Navajo Nation.

There were no recent deaths reported by the health agencies, keeping the death toll at 1,322.

The update was released at 11:24 p.m. on May 31 by the Office of the President and Vice President. It noted that the full report was not available due to Memorial Day.

Update for Sunday, May 30

9:11 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported two new COVID-19 positive cases on the Navajo Nation and no recent deaths, according to a news release issued Sunday night.

The number of deaths since the pandemic began rose to 1,324 on Sunday. The release stated that a full report for Sunday is not available due to the holiday weekend.

"Stay safe and keep taking precautions during this holiday weekend as we honor and remember our fallen warriors on Memorial Day," said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez. "We have to remain diligent in order to keep our daily numbers of new infections low. Please keep wearing masks in public and make good decisions for yourselves and others. We are overcoming the pandemic, but we have to do everything we can to keep pushing back on COVID-19 and the variation."

Update for Saturday, May 29

The Navajo Nation is reporting nine new confirmed COVID-19 cases and four additional deaths.

Tribal health officials said the latest figures released Saturday night pushed the total number of cases since the pandemic began more than a year ago to 30,839 on the vast reservation that covers parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.

The known death toll now is 1,322.

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said people must continue getting vaccinated, wear face masks and practice social distancing.

"I must also remind our people that following the Memorial Day weekend last year, we experienced an increase in new COVID-19 infections here," Nez said in a statement. "There are variants in every part of the country and here on the Navajo Nation that continue to pose risks for us all."

Updates for Friday, May 28

7 p.m.: Health officials for the Navajo Nation reported today 10 new COVID-19 cases and no recent virus-related deaths.

"Stay safe and take all precautions during the Memorial Day weekend. Our Navajo people and our frontline warriors have done so much to get us to where we are now with low numbers of new infections. We do not want to see an increase in new infections following the holiday weekend, so please make good decisions that keep us all safe and healthy," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in the press release from his office.

Be safe and keep praying for our frontline workers and all of our people," Navajo Nation Vice President Myron Lizer said in the release.

4:50 p.m.: The state health department announced 124 new COVID-19 cases on Friday and six new deaths.

The COVID-19 virus has killed 4,263 New Mexico residents since the pandemic began.

San Juan County reported 22 new cases Friday and no new deaths. The county has reported 15,426 cases since the pandemic began and has lost 484 residents.

There were 109 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infection on Friday.

As of Friday, there have been 188,743 COVID-19 patients who have recovered.

The state no longer reports COVID-19 statistics on weekends, so counts released on Mondays will contain figures for a three-day reporting period.

Updates for Thursday, May 27

7:57 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center reported today three new cases of COVID-19 for the Navajo Nation.

There were no recent virus-related deaths in the update. However, there were 12 deaths reported late due to delays in confirming the causes of death.

The total number of cases is 30,815 and includes 19 where delayed reporting occurred. The death toll is 1,318.

"As we approach Memorial Day weekend, I want all of our Navajo people to take time to remember our fallen warriors and their families and to safely enjoy time with your loved ones. I must also remind our people that following the Memorial Day weekend last year, we experienced an increase in new COVID-19 infections here on the Navajo Nation. So, please do everything you can to stay safe and prevent any further spread of the virus," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

5:13 p.m.: State health officials reported 131 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday.

The COVID-19-related death toll among New Mexico residents reached 4,259.

The Department of Health on Thursday reported five new deaths, including the recent deaths of these two San Juan County residents:

A woman in her 70s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.
A male in his 70s from San Juan County.

San Juan County, which reported 27 new cases Thursday, has counted 15,405 cases since the pandemic began. Including the two deaths reported Thursday, the county has lost 484 residents to the pandemic.

There were 120 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections on Thursday. There are 188,507 COVID-19 patients who have recovered since the pandemic began, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

Updates for Wednesday, May 26

7:35 p.m.: Today's report by health officials for the Navajo Nation lists six new cases of COVID-19 and four more deaths related to the virus.

"The Navajo Nation went from having one of the highest per capita infection rates in the country to some of the lowest daily infection numbers we have seen on a consistent basis, and that's thanks to our Navajo people, frontline warriors, and many others who did not back down but stood up to the virus by wearing masks and following protocols," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

"We are not out of the pandemic and we can expect to see new daily cases for some time until we get more and more of our people vaccinated. People can still get the virus even after being fully vaccinated, but the vaccines are highly effective in preventing severe symptoms and greater numbers of hospitalizations and deaths," Nez said.

4:19 p.m.: State health officials announced 167 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday and three more deaths.

The death toll among New Mexico residents due to the COVID-19 pandemic reached 4,254 on Wednesday.

San Juan County, which on Wednesday reported 19 new cases and no deaths, has reported 15,378 cases since the pandemic began. Under the state’s newly-adjusted case counts, the county has lost 482 residents to the pandemic as of Wednesday.

There were 130 people under treatment in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections.

There are 188,333 new Mexico residents who were diagnosed with COVID-19 and have recovered as of Wednesday, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

3:57 p.m.: New Mexico state health officials on Tuesday announced 186 new COVID-19 cases and reported six additional deaths, four of them recent and two that happened more than a month ago and are part of a case reporting backlog the state is working to resolve.

"COVID related deaths are reported when a death certificate has been issued and some death certificates are delayed due to insufficient information," the state said in a press release Tuesday.

The number of COVID-19-related deaths among New Mexico residents reached 4,251 on Tuesday.

A woman in her 50s from Santa Fe County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

Updates for Monday, May 24

6:03 p.m.: There were 366 new COVID-19 cases reported by New Mexico health officials over the state's three-day-long weekend reporting period and one new death.

Officials on Monday reported that the man who died was in his 60s and from Bernalillo County. He was hospitalized and had underlying conditions, according to a press release issued by health officials on Monday.

The statewide COVID-19-related death toll among New Mexico residents has risen to 4,245. The state has added numbers from a case-counting backlog, updating county-by-county mortality figures.

"The New Mexico Department of Health Epidemiology Division has conducted an audit of the reported cases and deaths related to the COVID-19 pandemic," the department said in Monday's release. "Delays in processing death records were caused by a variety of reasons and these changes reflect the reconciliation of public health information. These are the results of the audit and these numbers are now added or subtracted from the totals for each respective county."

San Juan County reported 61 new COVID-19 cases between May 22 and May 25 and no new deaths. The county has tallied 15,344 cases since the pandemic began and, under the state's newly-adjusted case totals, 482 deaths.

5:24 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center reported today two new COVID-19 cases and no recent deaths related to the virus.

Seven communities were identified by the Department of Health as having uncontrolled spread of COVID-19.

Baca-Prewitt, Chichiltah, Counselor, Naschitti, Newcomb, Nageezi, Rock Springs and Upper Fruitland and Indian Wells in Arizona were listed on this week's health advisory notice.

The health department used the number of new cases identified in these communities from May 7 to May 20 to compile the list.

"We have to keep our guard up despite our low numbers of reported cases and deaths. The vaccines are a key part of our fight against COVID-19, so please get vaccinated if you have not done so already," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the press release from his office.

He advocated for people to continue wearing face masks in public, frequently washing hands, practicing social distancing, avoiding large in-person gatherings and limiting travel.

The president's office will provide information about COVID-19 in a town hall at 10 a.m. on May 25 on the Nez-Lizer Facebook page.

"Reports indicate that 29,383 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. 272,076 COVID-19 tests have been administered," the Office of the President and Vice President said in a release Sunday. "The total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 30,778."

He added, "when you wear a mask, you are being a warrior because you're protecting yourself and others from the virus. Please continue to wear masks in public, wash your hands often, practice social distancing, avoid large in-person gatherings and limit travel as much as possible."

6:20 p.m.: Two new cases of COVID-19 and no recent virus-related deaths were reported today by health agencies for the Navajo Nation.

"We are all in this fight against COVID-19 together and we all have to be part of the solution. For several weeks, we've had consistent low numbers of new infections, but we have to keep taking precautions and get our numbers even lower," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update released by his office.

The Navajo Department of Health issued today a new public health emergency order that keeps businesses under the yellow status on the tribe's reopening plan, according to the update.

Flea markets and roadside markets can reopen on May 24 but operate under guidelines listed in the order.

4:28 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 175 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday and five new deaths.

The New Mexico Department of Health has reported a total of 201,868 COVID-19 cases across the state since the pandemic began.

San Juan County reported 37 of those new cases on Friday, the second-highest numbers in the state. There were 43 new cases reported in Bernalillo County.

San Juan County has reported 15,283 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began and 476 deaths. The death toll among New Mexico residents related to COVID-19 is now 4,131.

There were 144 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections.

5:44 p.m.: The Navajo Nation saw seven new cases of COVID-19 in today's update by the Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center.

No recent deaths were reported, keeping the death toll at 1,293. The total number of cases is 30,722.

There are 29,343 individuals who are considered recovered from the virus. A total of 270,405 tests have been conducted.

Shiprock and Upper Fruitland are among seven communities listed on the new health advisory notice as having uncontrolled spread of COVID-19.

The tribe's Department of Health also identified Baca-Prewitt, Chichiltah, Church Rock and Coyote Canyon and Blue Gap-Tachee in Arizona. The department compiled the list using case numbers from April 30 to May 13.

"This week, we have seven communities that are identified as having uncontrolled spread. We have to do better and keep pushing back on COVID-19 and that includes getting vaccinated," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

3:07 p.m.: There will be three opportunities this week to receive the COVID-19 vaccine without an appointment from the Shiprock Service Unit under the Navajo Area Indian Health Service.

"Help protect your whole family by getting yourself and your children 12 years of age and older vaccinated against COVID-19," states the Shiprock Indian Health Service in a post on its Facebook page.

According to the update, the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is available to kids as young as 12. Minors 12-17 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Clinics are also open to non-tribal members who live or work in communities within the Shiprock Service Unit or are members of Navajo families or households in the area.

The Shiprock Service Unit consists of Northern Navajo Medical Center, Dzilth-Na-O-Dith-Hle Health Center and Four Corners Regional Health Center.

People seeking a second shot need to bring their "COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card" to the events.

Tribal health officials said the latest figures released pushed the total number of cases since the pandemic began more than a year ago to 30,715.

The known death toll now is 1,293.

Tribal leaders on Sunday urged those who have not yet been vaccinated to do so.

Update for Saturday, May 15

The Navajo Nation has reported 15 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and one additional death.

Tribal health officials said the latest figures released Saturday evening pushed the total number of cases since the pandemic began more than a year ago to 30,708 on the vast reservation that covers parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.

The known death toll now is 1,292. After four days of no reported coronavirus-related deaths, tribal health officials said there were 12 new COVID-19 cases Friday and five deaths including several that were delayed in reporting.

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said more than half of the reservation’s adult population has been vaccinated, but people still need to stay home as much as possible, wear masks and avoid large gatherings.

Health care facilities on the Navajo Nation started vaccinating adolescents in the 12-to-15 age range late last week.

"The more people who get vaccinated, the greater protection for our communities against the virus," Nez said in a statement. "We have to continue to take precautions and to support each other."

5:45 p.m.: New Mexico's state health officials on Thursday announced 202 new COVID-19 cases.

The new numbers bring New Mexico’s total case count since the pandemic began to 200,432.

The Department of Health also reported two new COVID-19-related deaths. The pandemic has now claimed 4,112 New Mexico residents.

There were no COVID-19-related deaths reported Thursday in San Juan County, where 32 new cases were reported. Since the pandemic began the county has reported 15,034 cases and 470 deaths.

There were 106 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals on Thursday due to COVID-19 infections. Also on Thursday there were 185,567 COVID-19 patients diagnosed during the pandemic who have recovered.

5:40 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center reported today 14 new COVID-19 cases and one more death related to the virus.

In a press release, Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Jill Jim, the tribe's health department director, reaffirmed the requirement for people to wear face masks when on the tribal land.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced today new mask guidelines for people who are fully vaccinated, stating they no longer need to wear masks in many indoor situations or practice social distancing under certain circumstances.

"We are staying the course with our mask mandate here on the Navajo Nation. Everyone is still required to wear a mask in public, indoors and outdoors," Nez said in the release.

He added the tribe will continue to exercise caution and take careful steps to gradually lift restrictions after vaccination numbers increase.

Today's online town hall by the president's office focused on the move by the IHS to now offer the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to adolescents ages 12-15.

7:43 p.m.: Health officials on the Navajo Nation reported today 20 new cases of COVID-19 and no recent deaths.

The total number of cases is 30,662 and the death toll remains at 1,285.

Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for kids as young as 12, according to a press release from the Office of the President and Vice President.

The decision came two days after the Food and Drug Administration gave emergency use authorization for administering the vaccine to adolescents ages 12 to 15.

"Several health care facilities on the Navajo Nation will begin offering the Pfizer vaccine for adolescents as early as Thursday, while others will begin on Friday and Saturday," the press release states.

More information about the vaccine rollout will be provided during the virtual town hall by the president's office at 10 a.m. on May 13 on the Nez-Lizer Facebook page.

4:24 p.m.: There were 196 new cases of COVID-19 reported in New Mexico Wednesday, state health officials said.

The state also reported three new deaths related to the virus, including a man in his 80s from San Juan County who was a resident of the Bloomfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bloomfield.

The number of COVID-19-related deaths among New Mexico residents has reached 4,111. The statewide case total since the pandemic began reached 200,232 on Wednesday.

San Juan County reported 29 new cases Wednesday. The county has reported 15,002 cases since the pandemic began and 470 deaths, including the death reported Wednesday.

There were 113 people in New Mexico hospitals under treatment for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

The Navajo Area IHS is waiting on further guidance from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices before offering the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to those ages 12 to 15, according to a press release from the tribe's Office of President and Vice President.

On May 10, the Food and Drug Administration expanded the emergency use authorization for the vaccine to include adolescents 12 through 15 years of age.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will hold an emergency meeting on May 12 to discuss the recommendation.

"As the Navajo Area IHS awaits further guidance and approval from the CDC, the Indian Health Service is preparing to begin administering the Pfizer vaccine to the adolescent age group as quickly as possible," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the release.

4:30 p.m.: State health officials reported 137 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday and three new deaths.

The number of New Mexico residents who have died due to COVID-19 reached 4,108 Tuesday.

New Mexico overall has seen 200, 037 cases reported since the pandemic began.

There were 13 new cases reported in San Juan County, which has seen 14,973 cases since the pandemic began and 469 deaths.

There were 141 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals for COVID-19 on Tuesday. There were 185,249 people who have recovered from the virus since the pandemic began.

Statewide, New Mexico health officials reported 570 new COVID-19 cases on Monday. The number of deaths among New Mexicans due to COVID-19 reached 4,106 on Monday.

The statewide case total since the pandemic began is now 199,901

11:55 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies on Saturday reported 12 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation, and one new death. The death toll from the pandemic rose to 1,284 as of Saturday.

The total number of positive COVID-19 cases rose to 30,590.

Tribal officials say 29,224 people have recovered from COVID-19 since the pandemic began and 267,503 tests were given.

President Jonathan Nez thanked first responders and urged people to continue using precautions to avoid the spread of the virus.

"First Lady Phefelia Nez and I wish all of our Navajo people a safe and happy Mother's Day weekend," President Nez said in a prepared statement. "Please celebrate safely and take precautions to reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19. We are in this together and we are overcoming the pandemic one day at a time."

No case updates will be given on Sunday "to allow employees and health care workers to spend time with their families. Daily reports will resume on Monday, May 10," according to a release from the Office of the President and Vice President emailed Saturday night.

The Office of the President announced that more than 100,000 people on the Navajo Nation are fully vaccinated, based on information from the Navajo Area IHS.

"Community immunity is our goal here on the Navajo Nation. The more people who are fully vaccinated, the lesser risk of severe cases of COVID-19 and deaths. …Here on the Navajo Nation, we have over 100,000 people fully vaccinated, but we have to continue doing more to increase the overall vaccination percentage," tribal President Jonathan Nez said.

4:21 p.m.: Health officials on Friday announced 285 new COVID-19 cases and nine new deaths in New Mexico related to the virus, none in San Juan County. Of those cases, 55 were reported in San Juan County.

The COVID-19-related death toll among New Mexicans rose to 4,098 Friday. Statewide there have been 199,333 cases reported since the pandemic began.

In San Juan County there have been 14,805 cases reported since the first case was recorded in March of 2020. The county has logged 469 deaths during the pandemic.

On Friday there were 145 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19.

7:11 p.m.: Seven new cases of COVID-19 have been reported today by health officials for the Navajo Nation.

No recent deaths were in the update by the Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center.

The total number of cases is 30,550 and the death toll remains at 1,282.

"Our daily numbers of new COVID-19 cases have remained consistently low compared to where we were one year ago. The improvement we are seeing is due to the Navajo people, our frontline warriors and the effectiveness of the vaccines. We are in this fight together against the virus and we are overcoming the pandemic one day at a time," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

There are 29,201 individuals who are considered recovered from the virus, which is a tally revised today by the Navajo Epidemiology Center.

A total of 266,930 tests for the virus have been conducted.

5:27 p.m.: New Mexico state health officials on Wednesday reported 214 new COVID-19 cases and two new deaths in New Mexico related to COVID-19, none in San Juan County.

The number of COVID-19-related deaths among New Mexicans is now 4,085. The statewide total since the pandemic began is 198,781 cases.

San Juan County reported 40 new cases Wednesday. The county has recorded 14,703 cases and 469 deaths since the pandemic began.

There were 144 people hospitalized in New Mexico due to COVID-19 on Wednesday. Since the pandemic began 183,949 people who were diagnosed with COVID-19 have recovered, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

1:28 p.m.: San Juan County joined seven other counties in moving to the state's less-restrictive Turquoise Level of COVID-19 business restrictions on Wednesday when the state rolled out a fresh list of county rankings.

The county met two out of three requirements for an upgrade, as caseloads for new COVID-19 infections were higher that the state's goal. A positivity rate of 7.5% or less was required, and San Juan County came in at 7.40%. A vaccination rate of 53.50% for San Juan residents easily outpaced the state's goal as of May 5 of having at least 40% of residents vaccinated.

The new map shows 30 counties at Turquoise Level, with two counties still at Yellow Level and none at the most-restrictive Red Level.

The new restrictions increase so-called "mass gatherings" to 150 people.

Turquoise Level restrictions:

Counties at the Turquoise Level have three of the following or two of the following in two consecutive reporting periods: 1) a new COVID-19 average daily case incidence rate of no greater than 10 cases per 100,000 inhabitants during the most recent two-week period, 2) an average percent of positive COVID-19 test results less than or equal to 7.5%, or 3) a fully vaccinated rate at or above 40%.

Essential businesses (non-retail): No capacity restrictions but operations must be limited to only those absolutely necessary to carry out essential functions

Essential retail spaces: 75% of maximum capacity for indoor spaces and 100% outdoor

Food and drink establishments (if NM Safe Certified): 75% of maximum capacity for indoor dining; 75% of maximum capacity for outdoor dining

Close-contact businesses: 75% of maximum capacity; no restrictions on outdoor spaces

Large entertainment venues: 33% of maximum capacity for any indoor/enclosed space on premises; 75% of any outdoor space on premises

Recreational facilities: 50% of maximum capacity of any indoor/enclosed space on the premises; 75% of any outdoor space on premises

Bars and clubs: 33% of maximum capacity of any indoor/enclosed space on premises; 75% of any outdoor space on premises, where applicable

**All other businesses: 75% of maximum capacity indoors; no restrictions on outdoor spaces

Houses of worship: May operate at 100% capacity indoors or outdoors should they so choose

Places of lodging: No maximum occupancy restrictions for those that have completed NM Safe Certified training; 50% of maximum occupancy for all others; 15 guests maximum for vacation rentals

5:35 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 219 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.

Officials also reported 10 new COVID-19-related deaths in New Mexico, including a woman in her 60s from San Juan County who had underlying conditions.

The number of COVID-19-related deaths among New Mexico residents is now 4,083. There have been 198,576 cases reported in New Mexico since the pandemic began.

San Juan County has logged 14,663 cases since the pandemic began and 469 deaths, including the death reported Tuesday.

There are 138 people in the state hospitalized due to COVID-19. Recoveries number 183,813 people.

One death related to the virus was reported, raising the death toll to 1,282.

Updates for Monday, May 3

6:21 p.m.: Health officials for the Navajo Nation reported today three new cases of COVID-19 and no additional deaths.

The total number of cases is 30,522 and includes five where delayed reporting occurred. There have been 1,281 virus-related deaths.

According to the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President, the Navajo Area Indian Health Service reported that 247,165 vaccine doses have been received and 224,465 doses have been administered.

Those fully vaccinated is 99,254, according to the agency.

"We have nearly 100,000 people who are fully vaccinated here on the Navajo Nation. We are moving closer and closer to reaching herd immunity, but we have to remain diligent and remember that we have two variants identified within our homelands," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the release.

5:04 p.m.: State health officials reported 685 new COVID-19 cases statewide between Saturday, May 1, and Monday, May 3.

The state on Monday also reported six new COVID-19-related deaths among New Mexico residents during that period, none from San Juan County.

The number of COVID-19 related deaths among New Mexico residents is now 4,073.

The state has reported 198,372 cases since the pandemic began.

San Juan County reported 119 new cases during the weekend reporting period. The county has logged 14,625 cases since the pandemic began and there have been 468 deaths among county residents.

There were 132 people hospitalized in New Mexico Monday due to COVID-19. Also as of Monday, there are 183,656 COVID-19 people who contracted COVID-19 and have recovered, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

There have been 30,514 positive COVID-19 cases reported on the Navajo Nation since the pandemic began.

Reports indicate 16,585 people have recovered from COVID-19, and 265,659 tests were administered, according to a press release from the Office of the President and Vice President.
