Organs get dusting of snow Monday, more possible overnight

LAS CRUCES – The Organ Mountains may see a fresh dusting of snow overnight with White Sands Missile Range under a Phase 1 Snowfall Advisory.

According to the WSMR Meteorology Branch, up to 4 inches of snowfall is possible near San Augustin Pass along US 70. The branch issued a cautionary advisory Monday afternoon, Jan. 10 effective through Tuesday morning. Drivers are cautioned to watch for slick, icy and possibly dangerous roads.

Meteorologist Jason Laney with the National Weather Service said snow will most likely be light with very little impact. Flurries in the area are possible.

He said the weather system in the area will move easterly Monday evening. Any rainfall or snow will taper off with the system’s movement.

Laney said Las Cruces received light rain throughout Monday. Sleet pellets were seen in some areas but were generally insignificant. Rainfall totally to less than a quarter of an inch. 

The Organ Mountains got a dusting of snow Monday as a winter weather system moved through the southern New Mexico area.

Temperatures are expected to reach lows near 32 degrees overnight with a slight chance of rain lasting through midnight, according to the NWS. Sleet is possible in the early hours Tuesday.

Weather is forecasted to clear up Tuesday with a temperature high of 54 degrees and currently no possibility of precipitation.
