9:30 a.m.: Health officials for the Navajo Nation reported 22 new COVID-19 cases and one more death on Sept. 30.

The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

The latest figures and tallies were released at 10:06 p.m. on Sept. 30 by the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President and it included reports that 7,256 people have recovered while 106,867 tests have been administered.

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer will provide an update about COVID-19 on the Nez-Lizer Facebook page on Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. It will also broadcast on KTNN 660 AM or 101.5 FM.

Update for Wednesday, Sept. 30

5:16 p.m.: New Mexico state health officials on Wednesday announced 281 additional COVID-19 cases, 16 of them in San Juan County.

The state also reported the deaths of two Lea County men in their 80s, one of whom was hospitalized. The other man had underlying medical conditions.

The statewide death toll since March has reached 877.

As of today, there are 85 individuals hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19 and there are 16,671 patients who have recovered.

Updates for Tuesday, Sept. 29

8:20 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center today reported 20 new COVID-19 cases and no recent deaths for the Navajo Nation.

The department of health issued earlier today a new public health emergency order to update the daily curfew and implement additional weekend lockdowns due to rising cases in several areas on the reservation, according to a press release from the Office of the President and Vice President.

Beginning on Oct. 2, the daily curfew will start at 8 p.m. and there will be lockdowns for 57 hours for the first two weekends in October.

The health agencies shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

The latest figures and tallies were released by the president's office and it included reports that 7,255 people have recovered while 106,194 tests have been administered.

5 p.m.: The New Mexico Public Education Department announced Tuesday that two San Juan County students were among 16 people statewide across New Mexico's public schools to test positive for COVID-19.

"The infected individuals are students who were last on school property Sept. 22 and Sept. 27. All staff members and the parents and guardians of all students in the affected schools have been notified of the positive cases," the state said in a press release Tuesday.

4 p.m.: As COVID-19 continues to spread in New Mexico, state health officials reported 173 new cases on Sept. 29, including five San Juan County residents.

The new cases mean that 29,157 New Mexico residents have contracted the virus. While 16,565 of those people have recovered, 875 have died.

Two Eddy County residents who had contracted the disease were added on Sept. 29 to the number of lives lost due to the coronavirus. There are 80 people hospitalized in the state with COVID-19.

There will be an online town hall meeting by the Nez-Lizer administration to provide updates about COVID-19 and the U.S. Census at 10 a.m. on Sept. 29 on the president office's Facebook page.

4 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 143 new cases of COVID-19 on Sept. 28, including nine in San Juan County. Additionally, officials recorded three new fatalities, raising the number of deaths caused by the coronavirus to 873.

The new cases mean that 28,985 New Mexico residents have contracted the disease since the first case was reported in March. Of those people, state officials say 16,422 have recovered.

There are 76 patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

The latest figures were in a Sept. 27 press release by the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President and included reports that 7,250 people have recovered while 104,884 tests have been administered.

"Throughout this COVID-19 pandemic, we've relied on the advice of the health experts along with the data and the facts. Right now, the data and investigations conducted by contact tracers indicate that our Navajo people are holding family gatherings, which is leading to cluster cases among relatives," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the release.

"We have to continue listening to the experts to reduce the spread of the virus. We can tell the people over and over, but ultimately every person is responsible for their decisions and consequences. Stay home, wear a mask, practice social distancing, wash your hands, and avoid family gatherings," he said.

Updates for Sunday, Sept. 27

4:43 p.m.: New Mexico state health officials on Sunday announced 159 additional COVID-19 cases and no new deaths. The number of COVID-19-related deaths among New Mexico residents stands at 870.

As of Sunday 66 individuals are hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19 and 16,301 patients have recovered.

3:37 p.m.: Navajo Nation health officials report 32 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus, but no additional deaths, the Associated Press reported. The latest figures released Saturday night bring the total number of cases to 10,269 with the known death toll at 552.

Tribal officials said 104,746 people have been tested on the vast reservation that covers parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah and 72,250 have recovered from COVID-19. The Navajo Nation has implemented a stricter weekend lockdown as it looks into new clusters of coronavirus cases from family gatherings and off-reservation travel.

Updates for Saturday, Sept. 26

New Mexico state health officials on Sept. 26 reported 206 more COVID-19 cases, 13 of them in San Juan County. The statewide total rose to 28,692.

As of today, there are 72 patients hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19. There are 16,211 COVID-19 patients who have recovered.

There were five more deaths reported as well Saturday, including a woman in her 60s from San Juan County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

The number of deaths of New Mexico residents related to COVID-19 is now at 870.

Updates for Friday, Sept. 25

9 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center report 26 new COVID-19 cases and one additional death for the tribe today.

The update was provided in a press release from the tribe's Office of the President and Vice President, which stated that reports continue to indicate that COVID-19 outbreaks are occurring within the Sage Memorial Hospital service area in Arizona and within satellite chapters in the Eastern Agency in New Mexico.

The tribe has reported 70 new cases within two days, "a significant increase from last week," the release states.

4:30 p.m.: New Mexico once again saw increasing numbers of positive COVID-19 test results. State health officials reported 263 new cases on Sept. 25, including a dozen San Juan County residents.

The number of fatalities increased by six, rising to 865. Among those new deaths was a San Juan County resident in his 60s who was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions.

State health officials say 28,487 New Mexicans have contracted the virus since March and 16,020 of those people have recovered. There are 75 patients hospitalized with the disease.

Updates for Thursday, Sept. 24

6:55 p.m.: The uptick in new COVID-19 cases continues for the Navajo Nation with health officials reporting 42 additional cases. The tribe now has 10,212 total cases while the death toll remains at 551.

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer continue to receive reports about clusters of new cases related to individuals traveling away from the tribal land and contracting the new virus then infecting family members, a press release from their office states.

"We don't have a safe vaccine available for COVID-19, so we have to remain diligent to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe and healthy," Nez said in the release.

He calls on tribal members to refrain from holding family gatherings or traveling to hotspots outside the Navajo Nation.

3:45 p.m.: COVID-19 cases are continuing to increase and on Sept. 24 state officials reported 239 new cases, which included 15 San Juan County residents. The state also recorded two new coronavirus-related fatalities.

There are 66 people hospitalized and 16 of those people are on ventilators.

As of Sept. 24, 28,224 New Mexicans had contracted the virus and 15,825 of those people have recovered.

9:30 p.m.: The Navajo Nation had 27 new COVID-19 cases and three additional deaths reported today by the tribe's department of health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center.

The agencies shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

The latest figures and tallies were released by the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President and it included reports that 7,240 people have recovered while 103,343 tests have been administered.

"Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer continue to receive additional reports of increases in cluster cases related to individuals traveling off the Navajo Nation and contracting the virus, then spreading the virus to family members and relatives during family gatherings," the president's office press release states.

There will be a town hall meeting to provide an update about COVID-19 at 6 p.m. Thursday on the Nez-Lizer Facebook page.

4:15 p.m.: New Mexico continues to see increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases. On Sept. 23, state health officials reported 200 new cases, including four in San Juan County. The largest increase was in Dona Ana County with 33 new cases.

At the same time, health officials reported three new COVID-19 fatalities.

The new cases mean that 27,987 New Mexicans have contracted the virus and 857 of those people have died. Meanwhile, 15,669 people have recovered.

On Sept. 23, there were 72 patients hospitalized with the disease.

3:45 p.m.: There are new travel restrictions, according to the Associated Press. Travelers arriving in or returning to New Mexico from Colorado, Oregon and Rhode Island will be required to quarantine for 14 days in a bid to manage the spread of the coronavirus.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham added those three states to New Mexico’s list of “high risk” states on Wednesday based on coronavirus positivity rates and per capita infections.

In all, there are 39 states on New Mexico’s list of high risk states.

People who can show documentation of a valid negative COVID-19 test taken within the 72 hours before or after entry into New Mexico from another state are exempt from the quarantine requirement.

"The Navajo Department of Health re-issued a stay-at-home order for the entire Navajo Nation, and a 57-hour weekend lockdown beginning on Friday, Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. until Monday, Sept. 28 at 5 a.m. The daily curfew will continue from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays," the president's office press release states.

The latest order clarifies the start time for the daily curfew, which Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez stated was switching to 8 p.m. during today's virtual town hall meeting.

3:45 p.m.: New Mexico saw an increase of 110 COVID-19 cases on Sept. 22 and three new fatalities.

The new cases include nine San Juan County residents and increase the number of New Mexicans who have contracted the virus to 27,790.

There have been 854 COVID-19 related fatalities and 15,586 people have recovered. There are 69 patients hospitalized in New Mexico.

Update for Monday, Sept. 21

10 p.m.: Health care experts on the Navajo Nation are advising that the tribe return to 57-hour weekend lockdowns and revise its stay at home order, according to a press release tonight from the tribe's Office of the President and Vice President.

The changes are based on reports that the number of new COVID-19 cases have been increasing in the area served by Sage Memorial Hospital in Ganado, Arizona and due to reports of large social gatherings where physical distancing and wearing face masks was not enforced in satellite chapters in the Eastern Agency, the release states.

The update will be in a public health emergency order expected to be released on Tuesday.

Today, health officials reported 11 new cases of COVID-19 and no additional deaths.

Update for Sunday, Sept. 20

3:57 p.m.: Health officials in New Mexico on Sunday reported 67 new confirmed coronavirus cases with two additional deaths, increasing the statewide totals to 27,579 cases and 849 known deaths since the pandemic began, The Associated Press reported.

According to Johns Hopkins University data analyzed by The Associated Press, the seven-day rolling average of daily new COVID-10 cases in New Mexico and daily deaths both decreased over the past two weeks.

Of the 67 new cases, New Mexico Department of Health officials said 14 cases were in Chaves County with 12 in Dona Ana County and 11 in Bernalillo County. There was one new case in San Juan County.

As of today, there are 64 individuals hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19 and there are 15,412 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health.

The Department of Health says there are no COVID-19 cases among residents or staff in the past 28 days at any San Juan County long-term care facility.

4 p.m.: New Mexico saw 159 new cases of COVID-19 on Sept. 17, including two San Juan County residents.

While the new cases are up from the previous days, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said she still believes the state is trending in the right direction. She said that is because the positivity rate is about 2%. That means approximately 2% of the people who went and got tested had contracted the virus.

Lujan Grisham provided guidance on fall activities during a Facebook live session on Sept. 17.

The state has completed 845,167 total tests and the 159 cases reported on Sept. 17 are from about 7700 tests. The state has the goal to test at least 5,000 people a day and has averaged 4,617 tests over the past week. Lujan Grisham said fewer people are seeking tests and she encouraged anyone who is feeling sick to get tested.

“Please get tested. Let’s stop the spread of COVID-19,” she said.

Lujan Grisham said fall youth sports can practice and train with 10 people, but competition is still not allowed. An amended public health order that goes into effect Sept. 18 also allows swimming pools to reopen with a limit of 10 people in the pool at a time. Previously only one lane was allowed to be opened at a swimming pool. The amended order also allows pick your own pumpkin patches to operate. She said the state will release guidelines for pumpkin patches and corn mazes. State park campgrounds will open for New Mexico residents on Oct. 1.

Since March, 27,199 New Mexicans have contracted COVID-19 and 15,106 of those people have recovered. Meanwhile, 836 New Mexicans have died after contracting the virus. The number of fatalities increased by four on Sept. 17.

There are 69 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in New Mexico and 14 of those patients are on ventilators.

The latest figures and tallies were released by the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President and it included reports that 7,189 people have recovered while 100,301 tests have been administered.

"Today marks 33 consecutive days with less than 30 new cases of COVID-19 on the Navajo Nation. Our Navajo people are doing a good job, but we have to remain diligent and keep fighting this pandemic together," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in today's press release.

"There is still substantial risk due to the high numbers in towns and cities located near the Navajo Nation. Contact tracers have also attributed some recent spikes in new cases to family gatherings, so please do not have large gatherings due to the risks of COVID-19. Please continue to wear your masks, wash your hands, practice social distancing, avoid large crowds and stay home as much as possible," he said.

4 p.m.: San Juan County did not see any new cases of COVID-19 on Sept. 15, making it the third consecutive day without new positive tests.

Meanwhile, the state reported an increase of 82 cases and seven COVID-19 fatalities.

With the new cases, 26,923 New Mexicans have contracted the virus and 830 of those people have died.

State health officials say 14,634 people have recovered from the virus and there are 59 patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

Updates for Sunday, Sept. 13:

10 p.m.: Navajo Nation health officials have reported 15 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, but no deaths for the third time in six days, The Associated Press reported.

The latest numbers increase the total number of people infected to 9,969 with the known death toll remaining at 530 as of Saturday night. Numbers for Sunday were not yet available at 10 p.m. Sunday.

Tribal health officials reported one new coronavirus case Monday and no additional deaths for the first time since March. They also reported no deaths on Wednesday.

They said 99,153 people have been tested for COVID-19 so far and 7,177 have recovered.

Much of the Navajo Nation has been closed since March as the coronavirus swept through the vast reservation that extends into New Mexico, Utah and Arizona.

Tribal officials are extending partial weekend lockdowns and daily curfews through September to help control the spread of the coronavirus.

3:33 p.m.: New Mexico state health officials on Sunday announced 103 additional COVID-19 cases and two new virus-related deaths.

New Mexico has 26,761 COVID-19 cases and there are 59 individuals hospitalized. As of Sunday, 14,407 COVID-19 patients have recovered.

There have been 823 deaths among New Mexico residents related to COVID-19 including two women in their 70s from Bernalillo County who were residents of long-term care facilities in Albuquerque.

A total of 194 San Juan County residents have died after becoming ill with COVID-19, and cases in San Juan County total 3,233 as of Sunday.

6 p.m.: New Mexico registered three deaths among its 100 new COVID-19 cases on Sept. 12, according to figures from the Governor's Office.

New Mexico has totaled 26,661 cases of the virus. None of the deaths recorded on Sept. 12 were from San Juan County, but the county did report three new cases of the virus, and its total has reached 3,233 cases.

The three deaths were scattered across the state. They included a male in his 60s from Bernalillo County, a male in his 70s from Lea County and a male in his 30s from McKinley County. Dona Ana County had the most new cases in the state on Sept. 12 with 19.

A total of 194 San Juan County residents have died after becoming ill with COVID-19. Statewide, the virus has claimed 821 lives.

The Navajo Nation will be under a 32-hour lockdown starting at 9 p.m. Saturday and ending at 5 a.m. Monday as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the new virus.

"The Nez-Lizer administration is committed to preventing the spread of COVID-19 on the Navajo Nation, but we all have to continue working together to keep our numbers low. We are hopeful that we won't see a large spike in new COVID-19 cases due to the recent Labor Day weekend," tribal Vice President Myron Lizer said in a press release today.

4:05 p.m.: There are 137 new cases of COVID-19 in New Mexico, according to the Sept. 11 press release from the governor’s office. This means 26,563 New Mexico residents have contracted the virus since the first case was recorded in March. Of the 137 new cases, three are San Juan County residents.

The New Mexico Department of Health also reported two new COVID-19 fatalities, raising the number of deaths to 818.

State officials say 14,276 people have recovered from the virus and there are 73 patients hospitalized in New Mexico with COVID-19.

Nez mentioned that some of the positive cases over the last week were due to family gatherings and the current public health emergency order prohibits gatherings due to COVID-19.

"I am confident that we, the Navajo people, can minimize the impacts of the upcoming flu season by continuing to wear your masks, wash your hands, practice social distancing, stay home as much as possible, and avoid large crowds. We know how to reduce the spread of COVID-19, but we have to be disciplined enough to continue practicing those safety measures on a daily basis," Nez said.

4:30 p.m.: New Mexico’s COVID-19 case count increased by 44 on Sept. 8, raising the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the virus to 26,181.

The new cases include two San Juan County residents.

Health officials say 13,701 New Mexicans have recovered and 807 have died. No new fatalities were reported on Sept. 8.

There are 68 patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

3:16 p.m.: New Mexico state health officials announced 46 new cases of COVID-19 on Sept. 7 with four new deaths.

The New Mexico Department of Health announced four new cases for San Juan County with the death of a woman in her 50s.

The total number of coronavirus cases stands at 26,144 with 807 deaths.

There were 65 people hospitalized with COVID-19 on Sept. 7 along with 13,604 cases listed as recovered.

2:01 p.m.: On Sunday, The Navajo Department of Health, in coordination with other agencies, reported nine new COVID-19 cases.

The number of deaths reached 523 deaths as of Sept. 6, with one new death reported.

The total number of positive COVID-19 cases is 9,900 as of Sunday. There have been 97,110 COVID-19 tests administered and 7,148 individuals have recovered.

"We are optimistic that the Navajo Nation will not see another spike in new COVID-19 cases after this holiday weekend. We have done a lot of public outreach to educate our people about the importance of wearing masks, staying home, washing hands, social distancing, and avoiding large crowds. Hopefully, we don’t have too many people traveling this weekend and putting themselves at risk. Please make smart decisions for you and your family members and please think of others. Stay home, stay safe, and save lives,” said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez.

Updates for Sunday, Sept. 6, 2020

4:45 p.m.: On Saturday, The Navajo Department of Health, in coordination with other agencies, reported six new COVID-19 cases Saturday.

That report also included two recently reported deaths relayed from state reporting systems, deaths that happened between the months of May and August. The deaths were not recorded earlier “due to late notification from several states,” according to a press release by the Office of the President and Vice President.

As of Saturday the number of deaths reached 522.

“Reports indicate that 7,142 individuals have recovered from COVID-19 and 96,866 COVID-19 tests have been administered,” the release said. “The total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 9,891, which includes two additional cases that were delayed in reporting.”

The Navajo Nation’s 32-hour partial weekend lockdown started Saturday at 9 p.m. and ends Monday, Sept. 7, at 5 a.m.

"The new numbers indicate that our Navajo people are continuing to listen to the advice of our health care experts, but we have to remember that this pandemic is expected to last for at least the remainder of the year,” said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez in the release. “We cannot let up and have to keep fighting COVID-19. Unfortunately, there are reports of Navajo Nation residents traveling during this holiday weekend and putting themselves and their families at risk. These individuals have to understand that they are risking the health of their loved ones when they travel to hotspots and return home. Please think of others and not just yourselves. Please continue to wear your masks, wash your hands often, stay home as much as possible, avoid large crowds, and practice social distancing.”

4:16 p.m.: New Mexico reported 66 more cases of coronaviurus on Sunday and three more deaths, the Associated Press reported.

The latest numbers from the state Department of Health bring the total reported number of cases statewide to 26,107, with 803 deaths from COVID-19. Five of those new cases were in San Juan County. As of today, there are 65 individuals hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19 and 13,530 COVID-19 patients who have recovered.

The three deaths reported Sunday were a man in his 80s with an underlying health condition in San Juan County, a man in his 90s in Doña Ana County and a man in his 30s with an underlying health condition in McKinley County.

Of the new cases that were reported, 16 were in Chaves County, 10 in Bernalillo County and 9 were in Doña Ana County. The rest were reported across 10 other counties.

4:20 p.m.: New Mexico surpassed 26,000 cases of COVID-19 on Sept. 5 as health officials reported 152 cases and six additional fatalities.

This raises the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the virus to 26,048 and 800 New Mexicans have now died of the virus. There have been 13,460 recoveries. As of Saturday, 68 patients were hospitalized in the state with COVID-19.

The new cases include three San Juan County residents.

4:40 p.m.: New Mexico state health officials on Friday announced 96 more COVID-19 cases and three deaths.

Five of the new cases were in San Juan County.

As of today, there are 69 individuals hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19 and 13,412 patients have recovered.

The number of deaths of New Mexico residents related to COVID-19 is now 794.

4:30 p.m.: The number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic began increased by 202 on Sept. 3, including three San Juan County residents. These new cases raise the total number of state residents who have tested positive for the virus to 25,812. Of those people, 13,283 have recovered and 791 have died. The fatalities increased by one on Sept. 3.

There are 75 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in New Mexico.

4:05 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 154 new cases of COVID-19, raising the number of residents who have tested positive for the virus to 25,612.

The new cases include five in San Juan County, 10 in McKinley County, one in Rio Arriba County and one in Sandoval County.

There were three new coronavirus-related fatalities reported on Sept. 2, including a BeeHive Homes of Farmington resident in her 100s who had underlying medical conditions.

As of Sept. 2, 13,180 New Mexicans who had previously been diagnosed with COVID-19 have recovered from the disease.

There are 71 people hospitalized in state with COVID-19.

4:20 p.m.: Since March, 25,460 New Mexicans have tested positive for COVID-19. This includes 110 new cases identified on Sept. 1. Two of the new cases were San Juan County residents.

Of the more than 25,000 New Mexicans who have had the disease, 13,073 have recovered and 787 have died. The number of fatalities increased by eight in the Sept. 1 report from the governor’s office.
