Here are the July coronavirus updates from San Juan County, Four Corners region

The coronavirus known as COVID-19 continues to impact the Four Corners region.

The first case of the coronavirus documented in San Juan County was announced on March 21.

By the end of June, nearly 2,500 San Juan County residents had tested positive for the virus and more than 12,000 New Mexicans had received positive test results.

While the majority of people recovered, San Juan County had more than 160 coronavirus-related fatalities from March 21 through the end of June. Many of those deaths were in long-term living facilities.

While cases were trending down in June, the rate of spread started to increase at the end of the month and going into July.

Updates for Friday, July 31

9:21 p.m.: Health agencies on the Navajo Nation report 36 new cases of COVID-19 today as well as two more deaths.

The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

The total number of positive results is 9,055 and the total number of COVID-related deaths remains at 456.

The latest figures and tallies were released by the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President and it included reports that 6,677 people have recovered while 81,131 people have been tested.

Residents on the Navajo Nation are under a weekend curfew that started at 8 p.m. today and will end at 5 a.m. Monday. Businesses on the reservation are closed for the duration of the curfew.

According to the release, the Nez-Lizer administration presented a comprehensive proposal this week to provide student relief and assist schools from the amount the tribe received from the federal government for coronavirus relief.

"The focus of the funds first, is to implement a virtual learning platform at schools, as opposed to in-person classroom instruction. A second focus of the funds is to provide more safety measures for students, teachers and all school employees due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic," the release states.

4 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 216 new cases of COVID-19, including eight in San Juan County, one in Rio Arriba County, seven in Sandoval County and 11 in McKinley County.

There have now been 20,600 New Mexicans test positive for the disease. Of those people, 8,139 have recovered and 642 have died. The state recorded seven new coronavirus-related fatalities on July 31, including a San Juan County resident in his 30s who had underlying medical conditions.

There are 152 people hospitalized in New Mexico with COVID-19.

9:22 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center report 51 new cases of COVID-19 for the Navajo Nation today.

The latest figure brings the total number of positive results to 9,019. One more death was reported by the three agencies as well, raising the death toll to 454.

The agencies shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

The latest figures and tallies were released by the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President and it included reports that 6,627 people have recovered while 80,280 people have been tested.

The Navajo Nation will be under a 57-hour lockdown starting at 8 p.m. Friday and ending at 5 a.m. Monday.

"All businesses will be closed for the duration of the lockdown," the president's office press release states.

3:40 p.m.: The 255 new cases of COVID-19 include 22 in San Juan County, seven in Rio Arriba County, 35 in McKinley County and 14 in Sandoval County. The largest increase in cases was in Bernalillo County, where health officials identified 63 new cases of COVID-19.

One of the three people who died of COVID-19 and whose deaths were reported on July 30 was a San Juan County resident. The woman was in her 80s. She was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions.

The governor has extended the public health emergency order through the end of August.

3:10 p.m.: Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said there were 255 new cases of COVID-19 identified on July 30, bringing the total number of people who have tested positive to 20,388. There are 156 people hospitalized in the state and 33 are on ventilators. The state also announced three new coronavirus-related fatalities.

9:35 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center report 41 new COVID-19 cases for the Navajo Nation today.

The latest number raises the total number of positive cases to 8,968.

Seven additional deaths were reported as well, bringing the death toll to 453.

The agencies shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

4 p.m.: More than 20,000 New Mexicans have now tested positive for COVID-19, according to a press release from the governor's office. The 352 new cases identified on July 30 raised the number of New Mexicans who have contracted the virus to 20,136. The new cases include 18 in San Juan County, 17 in Sandoval County, eight in McKinley County and four in Rio Arriba County. The largest increase was in Bernalillo County, where health officials reported 87 new cases.

The number of people who have died after contracting COVID-19 increased by six on July 30, raising the number of fatalities to 632.

There are 158 people hospitalized in New Mexico because of the virus and 7,817 New Mexicans have recovered from COVID-19.

8:38 p.m.: The Navajo Nation saw one of its lowest number of new COVID-19 cases today. The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center report 15 new positive cases, bringing the total number to 8,927.

Five more deaths were reported by the three agencies, raising the death toll to 446.

4 p.m.: New Mexico saw an increase of 301 positive cases of COVID-19 on July 28, including 20 in San Juan County. The largest increase was in Bernalillo County, where health officials reported 80 new cases.

There were 16 new cases in McKinley County, one new case in Rio Arriba County and 15 new cases in Sandoval County.

The new cases raise the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive to 19,791. Of those people, 7,657 have recovered and 626 have died. The number of coronavirus-related fatalities increased by seven in the latest report. None of the seven new deaths were San Juan County residents.

There are 160 people hospitalized in New Mexico.

4:10 p.m.: New Mexico reached a new record for the highest number of new positive COVID-19 cases on July 27 when state officials reported 467 additional cases. The new cases include 12 in San Juan County. The largest increase in cases was 120 positive results in the Cibola County Correctional Facility.

There have now been 19,502 New Mexico residents test positive for COVID-19. Of those people, 7,459 have recovered and 619 have died. There were five coronavirus-related fatalities reported on July 27. None of them were San Juan County residents.

There are currently 159 people hospitalized in New Mexico with COVID-19.

Included in the release were reports that 6,547 people have recovered while 77,156 people have been tested.

"I express my appreciation to all the Navajo citizens who adhere to the weekend lockdowns. We can beat this virus if we work together. Other states and local governments observe the Navajo Nation on how we managed to slow the spread of COVID-19. There is no specific formula to slow the spread but practicing the recommendations of public health experts and leaders, such as wearing masks, social distancing, washing hands, staying home, has led us in a positive direction," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the release.

4 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 266 new cases of COVID-19, including four in San Juan County.

There have been 19,042 New Mexicans test positive for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 disease. Of those people, 7,349 have recovered and 614 have died. The number of coronavirus-related fatalities increased by seven on July 26. None were from San Juan County.

The latest figures and tallies were released at 10:05 p.m. Saturday by the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President.

Included in the information were reports that 6,525 people have recovered while 76,902 people have been tested.

"The data shows that the Navajo Nation has had under 100 new cases of COVID-19 on a daily basis for a month now, while cities and towns around us continue to contribute to the large increases of the virus in New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. We have to remain diligent and continue safe practices to ensure that our numbers continue to flatten," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the release.

Communities on the Navajo Nation remain under a lockdown until 5 a.m. Monday.

Update for Saturday, July 25

5:45 p.m.: More than 300 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in New Mexico on July 25, according to the state Department of Health, with the virus claiming the lives of six of those people.

One of the victims was a woman in her 60s from San Juan County who had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions. The other victims included two women in their 80s from Bernalillo County, a woman in her 60s from McKinley County, a man in his 70s from McKinley County and a man in his 80s from Sandoval County.

A total of 178 San Juan County residents have died after becoming ill with COVID-19. Statewide, the virus has claimed 607 lives.

According to state officials, New Mexico has registered 18,788 COVID-19 cases. State officials said 148 people were hospitalized in New Mexico on July 25 for COVID-19. The total number of people tested for the virus in New Mexico is 512,425.

Officials from the New Mexico Department of Health reported 10 new cases of the virus in San Juan County. There were 324 new cases reported statewide, with Bernalillo County leading the way with 93 cases.

The latest count brings the total number of cases to 8,768 and raises the death toll to 434.

Reports indicate 6,503 individuals have recovered from COVID-19 and 76,367 people have been tested for the disease.

A 57-hour curfew for the Navajo Nation began at 8 p.m. today and remains in place until 5 a.m. Monday.

4:45 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 317 new cases of COVID-19, including 12 in San Juan County, 24 in McKinley County, 11 in Sandoval County and six in Rio Arriba County.

The new cases raise the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for COVID-19 to 18,475.

New Mexico surpassed 600 coronavirus-related fatalities, according to the July 24 report. This comes after the state reported five new deaths, including a San Juan County resident in his 30s who was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions.

According to the July 24 report, 7,156 New Mexicans who have tested positive for COVID-19 have recovered. There are currently 161 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in New Mexico.

10 p.m.: Health agencies on the Navajo Nation report 50 new COVID-19 cases today, as well as one additional death related to the disease.

With today's figures, the total number of cases has reached 8,734 and raised the death toll to 432.

There have been 6,481 individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 and there are 75,775 individuals who have been tested.

The Navajo Nation will be under a lockdown for 57 hours starting at 8 p.m. Friday and ending at 5 a.m. Monday.

3:45 p.m.: Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced during a press conference that in-person learning will not be allowed through at least Labor Day. However, distance learning will be offered in August.

There are exceptions for children with special needs, who can be taught in-person in small groups or on a one-on-one setting. Small numbers of kindergartners, first graders, second graders or third graders who need additional learning support can also be taught in person, the governor said. In these settings, there cannot be more than five children per teacher.

This comes as New Mexico recorded its highest number of cases in one day since the pandemic began — 343 additional COVID-19 positive tests.

The new cases include 21 in San Juan County, 16 in Sandoval County, five in Rio Arriba County and 26 in McKinley County. The largest increase in cases came in Bernalillo County, where the New Mexico Department of Health is reporting 126 new cases.

There have now been 18,163 New Mexicans test positive for the virus. Of those people, 7,056 have recovered and 596 have died. The number of coronavirus-related deaths increased by five. None of the fatalities reported on July 23 were San Juan County residents.

There are 167 people hospitalized with COVID-19 and 34 of them are on ventilators.

8:30 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center report 45 new COVID-19 cases and six more deaths for the Navajo Nation.

Today's report raises the total number of cases to 8,684 and 431 people have died so far from the disease.

The agencies shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer signed a new executive order to extend the state of emergency for the tribe and to keep the tribal government closed through Aug. 16.

"We are doing our very best to keep our Navajo Nation residents safe and healthy using the information, input and data from our health care experts," Nez said in a press release from his office.

3:45 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 316 new cases COVID-19 in a press release. Those include eight cases in San Juan County, 35 in McKinley County, five in Rio Arriba County and 15 in Sandoval County. The highest increase in cases came in Bernalillo County where health officials reported 89 new cases of COVID-19.

The new cases bring the total number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for COVID-19 to 17,828. Of those people, 6,974 have recovered and 591 have died. The number of coronavirus-related fatalities increased by three in the most recent report, but none were from San Juan County.

There are 178 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in New Mexico.

The total number of cases is 8,639 and the death toll is at 425, according to the Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center.

There are 6,437 individuals who have recovered from the disease and 74,045 people have been tested, according to reports.

In a press release from his office, tribal President Jonathan Nez noted today was the 26th day the health agencies reported less than 100 new cases and it is the 5th day that number is below 50.

The administration is preparing for the upcoming flu season, which is expected to lead to more challenges in addressing COVID-19, the release states.

"We have to be prepared for the flu season and we also need to dedicate more resources to secure and distribute flu vaccines and COVID-19 vaccines when testing is complete and made safely available. The large majority of our Navajo people are complying with the public health emergency orders and our daily numbers are flattening on a consistent basis," Nez said in the release.

3:40 p.m.: New Mexico saw an increase of 307 new COVID-19 cases on July 21, according to a press release. The new cases include 19 in San Juan County, 47 in Rio Arriba County, nine in Sandoval County and 16 in McKinley County. The largest increase was in Bernalillo County, where officials reported 60 new cases of COVID-19.

The new cases raise the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the virus to 17,517. Of those people, 6,870 have recovered and 588 have died. There are also 154 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in New Mexico.

The number of coronavirus-related fatalities increased by 10 in the most recent report. None of the newly reported deaths are San Juan County residents.

Reports indicate that 6,369 individuals have recovered from COVID-19 and the number of people tested for the disease is 73,684.

4 p.m.: New Mexico saw an increase of 255 new cases of COVID-19, according to a press release issued July 20. The new cases include eight in San Juan County, 14 in Sandoval County, 13 in McKinley County and six in Rio Arriba County. The largest increase was in Bernalillo County, where officials reported 88 new cases.

The new cases increase the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 to 17,215. Of those people, 6,814 have recovered and 578 have died. There are 154 people hospitalized in New Mexico with COVID-19. That could include people brought in from out of state.

The number of coronavirus-related fatalities increased by seven in the most recent report. None of those seven were San Juan County residents.

Updates for Sunday, July 19

11:10 p.m.: On Sunday there were 25 new COVID-19 positive cases reported for the Navajo Nation and seven more deaths, according to the Navajo Department of Health, working in coordination with the Navajo Epidemiology Center and the Navajo Area Indian Health Service.

The total number of deaths has reached 422. The total number of COVID-19 positive cases for the Navajo Nation is 8,593.

There have been about 6,360 recoveries reported from COVID-19 and 72,804 people have been tested.

A press release from the Office of the President and Vice President stated there will be two more 57-hour weekend lockdowns, the first from July 24 to July 27, and the second from July 31 to Aug. 3, starting at 8 p.m. on those Fridays and ending at 5 a.m. on those Mondays.

“A separate order is being developed to require residents that travel to “hotspots” to quarantine for 14 days when they return to the Navajo Nation,” the release stated.

“The data shows that the weekend lockdowns and other requirements such as wearing masks are working to flatten the curve on the Navajo Nation,” President Jonathan Nez said in the release. “In cities and states around our Nation, they began letting up on restrictions too soon and now they’ve been seeing increases for weeks. We do not want to make that mistake here on the Navajo Nation.”

6 p.m.: San Juan County reported six new cases of COVID-19 among the 241 new cases recorded Sunday by the New Mexico Department of Health.

Bernalillo County came in with 99 new cases, a number substantially higher than any other county in the state.

Sunday's report brings the number of people in this state infected with COVID-19 to 16,971. Two new deaths bring the number of deaths among New Mexico residents related to COVID-19 to 571.

There are now 2,834 COVID-19 cases that were diagnosed in San Juan County.

There were 161 people hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19 on Sunday, and 6,764 people who had been diagnosed with the virus have recovered, according to state health officials.

The latest reports raised the total number of cases to 8,536 and increased the death toll to 412.

"The Navajo Police Department and the New Mexico National Guard will once again setup checkpoints in various communities to help enforce the weekend lockdown," the release states.

Update for Friday, July 17

4 p.m.: New Mexico health officials reported 319 additional cases of COVID-19 on July 17, including 26 in San Juan County, 37 in Rio Arriba County, 16 in McKinley County and 12 in Sandoval County. The largest increase was in Bernalillo County where officials reported 111 new cases.

The new cases increase the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the virus to 16,456. Of those people, 6,654 have recovered. There are 166 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in New Mexico. Some of those people have been transferred in from out of state and are not included in the case numbers for the state. The new cases brings the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 to 16,138. Of those people, 6,578 have recovered, 170 are hospitalized and 562 have died.

The Navajo Nation started the 57-hour lockdown for the weekend at 8 p.m. today. It ends at 5 a.m. July 13.

A press release from the Office of the President and Vice President reminds the public that all businesses on the reservation are required to close for the lockdown to help prevent travel among residents and visitors.

"The Navajo Nation's stay at home order remains in effect requiring all individuals on the Navajo Nation to stay at home and strictly limit movement and limit public contact with others. Individuals may leave their place of residence only for emergencies or to perform 'essential activities.' All residents are also required to avoid close contact with people who are sick, wash your hands for 20 seconds often, avoid touching high-touch surfaces, wear a mask, clean and disinfect your home, avoid public gatherings and avoid non-essential travel," the release states.

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer will provide updates about COVID-19, the Wood Springs 2 fire and the 2020 census at 10 a.m. Thursday on the Facebook page for their office. They will participate in a live radio forum at 6 p.m. Thursday on radio station KTNN AM 660.

3:45 p.m.: New Mexico saw an increase of 290 cases of coronavirus on July 8, according to a press release from the governor's office. The 290 new cases include 18 in San Juan County and 23 in McKinley County. The largest increase was in Bernalillo County, where there were 99 new cases reported.

The new cases raise the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the virus to 14,017. Of those people, 6,051 have recovered, 154 are hospitalized and 527 have died.

The number of coronavirus-related fatalities increased by eight on July 8, including a San Juan County man in his 40s who was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions.

8:54 p.m.: The Navajo Nation had 27 new positive cases of COVID-19 today as well as one additional death reported by the tribe's Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center.

The total number of cases has reached 7,941 and the death toll is now 379.

The agencies shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

"The state of Arizona now has the highest percentage of COVID-19 cases in the country. That's an alarming fact and that's why we need to continue wearing masks in public, staying home as much as possible, washing your hands often, practicing social distancing and praying for our nation. We are flattening the curve on a consistent basis, but this pandemic is far from over so let's keep fighting the coronavirus together," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in a press release from his office.

4 p.m.: The New Mexico Department of Health is reporting 221 new cases of COVID-19, including 34 in San Juan County, 12 in McKinley County and nine in Rio Arriba County. The largest increase in cases on July 7 was in Bernalillo County, where health officials reported 88 new cases.

Counting the new cases, 13,727 New Mexicans have tested positive for the coronavirus. Of those people, 5,986 have recovered, 133 are hospitalized and 519 have died. The number of coronavirus-related fatalities increased by four on July 7, including a San Juan County resident in his 70s who had underlying medical conditions.

There were no additional deaths reported by the agencies today, keeping the death toll at 378.

The agencies shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

Today's press release from the Office of the President and Vice President states that the health department issued a new public health emergency order on July 5, which clarifies the stay at home order for residents on the Navajo Nation.

The July 5 order states that everyone on the reservation shall comply with the following consistent with the current public health emergency orders:

Daily curfew from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. from Public Health Emergency Order No. 2020-013 (June 5, 2020). Weekend curfews or lockdowns may be implemented.
Wear a mask in public from Public Health Emergency Order No. 2020-007 (April 17, 2020) .
Avoid public gatherings of more than 5 people. "Drive-in" gatherings are permissible during non-curfew hours from Public Health Emergency Order No. 2020-14 (June 5, 2020).
Remain in your vehicle for curbside and drive-thru essential activities.

3:40 p.m.: New Mexico health officials announced 253 new cases of COVID-19 on July 6, including 18 in San Juan County and 12 in McKinley County. The largest increase on Monday was in Doña Ana County, which saw 85 new cases of the coronavirus. Meanwhile cases in Bernalillo County increased by 60.

There were two new coronavirus-related fatalities reported on July 6. One was a Bernalillo County resident and the other lived in Sandoval County.

The new cases raised the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the virus to 13,507. Of those people, 5,902 have recovered, 515 have died and 129 are hospitalized.

8:39 p.m.: In coordination with other agencies, the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, reported Sunday there are 38 new COVID-19 positive cases on the Navajo Nation, and one more death.

The total number of deaths has reached 378. There are 7,840 COVID-19 positive cases on the Navajo Nation. (See Saturday's Navajo Nation totals at the bottom of this date's blog entry.)

About 5,581 people who were diagnosed with COVID-19 recovered, and 58,769 people have been tested for the virus.

"In areas near and around the Navajo Nation, they continue to see sharp increases in new COVID-19 cases, but today the Navajo Nation is reporting 38 new cases," said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez. "This is a strong indication that mask requirements, weekend lockdowns, daily curfews, and other measures recommended by our health care experts are making a difference. Please continue to wear your masks in public and to wash your hands often. 4 p.m.: New Mexico health officials have reported an additional 203 coronavirus cases but no more known deaths as of Sunday. Of those cases, 28 were reported in San Juan County.

That puts the statewide total of confirmed COVID-19 infections at 13,256 with the death toll remaining at 513.

A total of 164 San Juan County residents have died after becoming ill with COVID-19. The county has recorded a total of 2,542 cases as of July 5.

Statewide, 5,860 people diagnosed with COVID-19 have recovered, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

The state's most populous county, Bernalillo, led all others July 5 with 65 of the additional cases reported for that day. In southern New Mexico, Doña Ana County reported an additional 38 cases.

Health officials said there are 119 individuals hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19. That number may include individuals who tested positive for COVID-19 out of state, but are currently hospitalized in New Mexico.

3:30 p.m.: Navajo Nation health officials have reported 71 additional cases of COVID-19 and two more known deaths.

A total of 7,804 people on the vast reservation that spans parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah have tested positive with 337 known deaths as of Saturday night. (See Sunday Navajo Nation totals at the top of this date's blog entry.)

Tribal Department of Health officials said reports from all 12 health care facilities on and near the Navajo Nation indicate that 58,440 people have been tested and 5,543 have recovered from COVID-19.

The number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.

The coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms such as fever and cough for most people.

But for some — especially older adults and people with existing health problems — it can cause more severe illness including pneumonia, and death.

Tribal police and the New Mexico National Guard are enforcing a weekend curfew on the Navajo Nation as officials on the sprawling reservation continue to try to contain the coronavirus outbreak.

The curfew that started at 8 p.m. Friday and expires at 5 a.m. Monday is the first of three consecutive weekend lockdowns on the reservation.

4:45 p.m.: Two McKinley County residents became the latest people to die of COVID-19 in New Mexico on July 4, bringing the state's total number of deaths to 513.

The victims were women in their 50s and 60s. Both had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

The New Mexico Department of Health reported 291 new cases on July 4, 21 of which were in San Juan County. There were no deaths from the virus reported in San Juan County, but a total of 164 county residents have died after becoming ill with COVID-19. The county has recorded a total of 2,515 cases.

State officials said 121 people were hospitalized in New Mexico on July 4 for COVID-19.

8:26 p.m.: There are 64 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation and two more deaths, the Navajo Department of Health, in coordination with the Navajo Epidemiology Center and the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, reported on Friday.

The total number of deaths has reached 375.

"Reports from all 12 health care facilities on and near the Navajo Nation indicate that approximately 5,527 individuals have recovered from COVID-19," a release from the Office of the President and Vice President stated.

The release said 58,145 people have been tested for COVID-19, and the total number of COVID-19 cases for the Navajo Nation is 7,733.

5:35 p.m.: New Mexico state health officials on Friday announced 257 additional COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total to 12,776.

As of today, there are 130 people who are hospitalized in New Mexico due to COVID-19 and there are 5,802 people identified as having tested positive for COVID-19 who have recovered, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

The state also reported eight new deaths due to the virus, including a man in his 50s from San Juan County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

Updates for Thursday, July 2

11:17 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health reported 56 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation and two more deaths as the Navajo Police Department and the New Mexico National Guard got ready to enforce a 57-hour weekend lockdown beginning Friday evening.

There are 7,669 COVID-19 positive cases on the Navajo Nation as of July 2.

The total number of deaths climbed to 371, and 12 health care facilities on and near the Navajo Nation reported that about approximately 5,480 people who tested positive for the virus have recovered.

There have been 57,559 people have been tested for COVID-19 on the Navajo Nation.

The lockdown, imposed in an attempt to stem the spread of the virus, starts July 3 at 8 p.m. and ends July 6 at 5 a.m.

This is the first of three weekend lockdowns, the Office of the President and Vice President said in a press release the night of July 2.

"The majority of Navajo residents comply with the weekend lockdowns, but there are a handful of residents who do not comply and continue to travel off the Nation and put themselves and others at risk of contracting the coronavirus,” President Jonathan Nez said in the release. “This weekend, our law enforcement officers and the New Mexico National Guard are partnering to step up enforcement of the lockdown and they will have checkpoints setup in communities across the Navajo Nation.”

Tribal leaders also put in a plea for fire safety over the hot holiday weekend.

"Please do not use fireworks and please enjoy the holiday with your loved ones safely at home," said President Nez.

President Nez and Navajo Area BIA Regional Director Bart Stevens issued fire restrictions in mid-May that ban “fireworks, trash burning, wood burning, camp fires, discharging a firearm except while engaged in a lawful hunt, use of chainsaws and welding torches with open flames. Fines may reach as high as $5,000 for violations,” the release said.

Vice President Myron Lizer urged people to stay home and spend quality time with their families, and to think of those who are on the firelines working to protect others.

“Please continue to pray for our first responders who are fighting to save lives and those who are fighting the Wood Springs 2 Fire as well," Lizer said.

Health officials announced 130 new cases of COVID-19, including 38 in San Juan County and 17 in McKinley County.

There have been 12,276 New Mexicans test positive for COVID-19. Of those people, 5,514 have recovered and 127 people are hospitalized.

The increasing cases have led state officials to pause reopening and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said mandatory face coverings will be aggressively enforced. People who do not wear masks or face coverings could face a $100 fine. Business owners that do not require mask or face coverings will face penalties, the governor said.

People coming into New Mexico from out of state will be required to quarantine for 14 days.
