One dead, no suspects in custody after apartment shooting

LAS CRUCES - The Las Cruces Police Department responded to a shooting that left one man dead at an apartment complex near South Valley Drive and Main street Tuesday afternoon.

Mandy Guss, communications director at the City of Las Cruces, confirmed that police were on scene at an apartment complex on Desert Rose Court In a news release at 4:30 p.m., Guss confirmed that one man was dead. 

"Police do not have any suspects in custody and do not believe the community is in danger," Guss said in the news release. "Police are still investigating and are asking for anyone with information to call Las Cruces police at 575-526-0795."

Dozen of police cars, detectives and the department's crime scene unit could be seen at the apartment complex at about 1:15 p.m. 

One witness, who was sequestered to her home as police had locked down the area, said she witnessed a man shoot another man at around 12 p.m. 

"He just got out of his car, he pulled out (a gun) and he shot," the witness, who requested she not be identified, told the Sun-News

She said she was returning to her apartment from work on her lunch break. She said she noticed a car acting suspiciously. Then, a man got out of the car and fired a single shot, she said.

As the witness fled to her apartment, she said she heard other people screaming and yelling, saying there was blood and calling for an ambulance. Another witness described hearing a single gunshot and the calls for help. 

On Tuesday night, LCPD SWAT units surrounded that 1100 block of Monte Vista. The SWAT situation was related to the shooting but no arrests were made, according to the city.
