Abilene man killed in one-vehicle crash Sunday, sixth traffic fatality in two weeks

An Abilene man was killed about 5:20 p.m. Sunday in a one-vehicle crash near U.S. Highways 83/84 and Antilley Road, Abilene police said in a news release. 

Donald Neil Chick, 64, was driving a pickup onto the highway's southbound lanes prior to Antilley Road when the vehicle veered southeast off the road. The truck traveled through the grassy median, crossed two lanes and struck the center concrete barrier, the release said. 

Chick, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. 

An investigation is continuing.

This is second fatal crash in that area over the past week, the other killing two due to a wrong-way driver.

In a two-week span, six people have died in Abilene vehicle wrecks, police said. The recent fatal crashes are:

► A 36-year-old man was driving a pickup south in the 600 block of T&P Lane at about 6:05 p.m. April 26 when the vehicle veered from the road and struck a utility pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene. 

► About 7:30 p.m. April 26 in the 2500 block of East Highway 80, an eastbound motorcycle collided with a pickup that was turning from the westbound lanes south toward Loop 322. The 46-year-old male motorcycle driver and his 32-year-old female passenger died at the scene.

► About 9 p.m. May 4, a 97-year-old man driving south in the wrong lane of U.S. Highways 83/84 near Kirby Lake struck head on a northbound SUV driven by a 35-year-old woman. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Abilene already has had 12 traffic fatalities in 2022, compared to 16 in 2021, 14 in 2020, nine in 2019 and 15 in 2018, according to APD statistics.
