San Juan County, Navajo Nation COVID-19 case updates for January 2022

State public health order extended

The New Mexico Department of Health "renewed public health orders related to COVID-19, including a requirement to wear masks in public spaces and vaccination requirements for some workers," the department announced Friday, Jan. 7.

"The public health orders come as case numbers reach highs not seen since 2020 and as hospitals around the state continue to operate under crisis standards of care," the news release said. "The orders also underscore important updated guidelines which have reduced the timeline for isolation and quarantine from ten days to five, with the inclusion of a well-fitting mask for an additional five days."

The extension is until early February.

Free county vaccination clinics

The San Juan County Public Health Office will hold clinics to administer the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine and flu shots in January.

To register for these or other events, go to vaccinenm.org. There will be on-site registration and walk-ins depending on the available doses.

Parents can use the website to schedule appointments for their dependents by logging into the parent profile. They also need to approve the electronic consent before arriving to the clinic site.

NNMC offers COVID-19 and flu vaccination events

Flu shots and the COVID-19 vaccine are available on the Navajo Nation through Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock.

A new release by the hospital explained that flu shots are available for Indian Health Service beneficiaries ages 3 and older while first and second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine are available for IHS beneficiaries ages 5 and older.

COVID-19 booster shots are available to individuals ages 16 and older who completed the primary, two-dose Pfizer or Moderna series six months ago or the Johnson & Johnson vaccine more than two months ago.

"At this time, only the Pfizer vaccine is authorized and recommended for adolescents aged 16 and 17," the news release states.

Updates on Monday, Jan. 31

10:10 p.m.: A three-day counting period running from Jan. 29 until Jan. 31 yielded 9,445 new cases of COVID-19 in New Mexico, the state Department of Health reported Monday in a news release.

The state also reported 37 more pandemic-related deaths, including a woman in her 80s from San Juan County who had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

Statewide there have been 480,087 cases of COVID-19 recorded in New Mexico since the pandemic began and 6,454 pandemic-related deaths.

San Juan County has seen 37,295 COVID-19 cases reported since the start of the pandemic and has lost 690 residents, according to the state Department of Health’s website. The state also reported 820 new cases in San Juan County over the three-day counting period.

The statewide 7-day test positivity rate dropped to 28.5% Monday. It was 30.1% on Friday.

There were 590 people in New Mexico hospitals Monday due to COVID-19 infections.

“As of today, there are 343,160 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health,” the release said.

9:31 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 18 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation Monday and no new deaths.

"The total number of deaths remains 1,616," a news release from the Office of the President and Vice President said. "The report indicates that 46,290 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. 474,335 COVID-19 tests have been administered. The overall total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 49,766, including nine delayed reported cases."

5:12 p.m.: The State of New Mexico's Department of Health has announced that its release of COVID-19 statistics from its three-day counting period will be delayed today.

Numbers for the Navajo Nation also have not yet been released.

Updates on Sunday, Jan. 30

The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies on Sunday reported 104 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation and no new deaths.

"The total number of deaths remains 1,616," the Office of the President and Vice President said in a news release "The report indicates that 45,952 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. 470,464 COVID-19 tests have been administered. The overall total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 49,739, including 38 delayed reported cases."

Updates on Saturday, Jan. 29

The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 250 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation Saturday and two more deaths.

"The total number of deaths is now 1,616.," the Office of the President and Vice President said in a news release "The report indicates that 45,475 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. 470,464 COVID-19 tests have been administered. The overall total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 49,597, including 63 delayed reported cases."

Updates on Friday, Jan. 28

7:49 p.m.: There were 5,291 new COVID-19 cases reported Friday in New Mexico, according to a news release from state health officials.

The state also reported 26 more deaths, 20 of them recent. Among those were three San Juan County residents:

• A woman in her 30s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

• A woman in her 60s who had been hospitalized.

• A woman in her 90s from San Juan County.

There have been 470,513 COVID-19 cases reported in New Mexico since the pandemic began, 36,477 of them in San Juan County. The county reported 322 new cases Friday and has so far reported 689 pandemic-related deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Statewide the pandemic has killed 6,417 New Mexico residents as of Jan. 28, according to the state health department’s website.

The statewide 7-day test positivity rate rose to 30.1% Friday from Wednesday and Thursday’s 29.9%.

There were 673 people under treatment in New Mexico hospitals Friday due to COVID-19 infections.

“As of today, there are 336,396 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health,” the news release said.

5:48 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center are reporting 212 new COVID-19 cases and two more deaths today.

Their report included 95 cases that were not immediately known to the agencies. Since the pandemic started in March 2020, there have been 49,284 cases for the tribe.

The death toll rose to 1,614 today.

There are 44,941 individuals who are considered recovered from the virus. A total of 470,464 tests have been conducted.

"If you are experiencing symptoms such as a sore throat, fever, body aches, congestion, or other COVID-19 related symptoms, please remain at home and make a plan to get tested," tribal Vice President Myron Lizer said in the update. "It takes all of us working together and doing our part to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Please be safe, take precautions, and pray for our people."

Updates on Thursday, Jan. 27

7:18 p.m.: Today's update from health officials for the Navajo Nation shows 366 new COVID-19 cases and three additional virus-related deaths.

"Our administration is working with the White House and others to secure more KN95 masks for our Navajo people," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update. "If you do not have a KN95 mask, please wear two masks if you have to go into public places."

The total number of cases is 48,977. This number includes delayed reporting for 38 cases. The death toll is now 1,612.

There are 44,700 individuals who are considered recovered from the virus. A total of 469,529 tests have been conducted.

6:52 p.m.: Health officials reported 5,179 new COVID-19 cases across New Mexico on Thursday. Officials had reported 4,119 new cases on Wednesday.

There were also 34 more deaths related to the pandemic, bringing the state’s COVID-19 death toll to 6,391, according to a New Mexico Department of Health news release.

The state has seen 465,244 cases since the pandemic began, 36,157 of them in San Juan County. The county added 484 new cases on Thursday.

The statewide 7-day test positivity rate, reflecting the percentage of COVID-19 tests taken during a 7-day period that came back positive for COVID-19, stayed at 29.9% Thursday.

With the resumption of county-by-county outlooks, the state reports that San Juan County’s averages from Jan. 10 to Jan. 24 were just over 289 cases per 100,000 people and a 33.72% test positivity rate.

The Farmington-area 87401 Zip Code had 197 new cases Thursday, the highest number of any New Mexico Zip Code.

San Juan County added four more deaths on Thursday, two of them recent, for a total of 686 pandemic-related deaths as of Jan. 27, according to the state health department’s website.

The two recent San Juan County deaths were:

• A man in his 60s who had been hospitalized.

• A man in his 70s who had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

Two more deaths reported Thursday happened more than 30 days before:

• A man in his 50s.

• A man in his 90s who had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

There were 713 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections on Thursday.

“As of today, there are 334,988 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health,” the news release said.

Updates on Wednesday, Jan. 26

5:36 p.m.: Health officials for the Navajo Nation report 113 new COVID-19 cases today as well as one virus-related death.

According to the update, there were 65 cases that were not immediately reported to officials.

Since the pandemic started in March 2020, there have been 48,573 cases and 1,609 people have died.

There are 44,586 individuals who are considered recovered from COVID-19. A total of 467,887 tests have been conducted.

5:14 p.m.: After a slight dip, case numbers in New Mexico rose again above the 4,000-per-day mark Wednesday as hospitalization numbers passed 700 patients.

New Mexico Department of Health officials reported 4,119 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday and 40 more deaths, 25 of them recent, according to Wednesday's news release.

The state had reported 3,354 cases on Tuesday.

Among the recent deaths reported Wednesday were those of three San Juan County residents:

• A woman in her 50s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

• A woman in her 60s who had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

• A man in his 70s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

There have been 6,357 pandemic-related deaths in New Mexico as of Jan. 26. Of those, 679 were San Juan County residents, the state health department’s website reports.

The state has recorded 460,062 cases since the pandemic began.

San Juan County has recorded 35,676 of those cases, adding 250 new cases Wednesday, with 78 of those cases in the 87401 Zip Code.

There were 709 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals Wednesday due to COVID-19 infections. On Tuesday there were 678 people hospitalized. That number was 639 people on Monday and 633 people the previous Friday

“As of today, there are 334,164 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health,” the news release said.

The statewide 7-Day positivity rate dropped just slightly to 29.9% from 30% on Tuesday. It was 30.8% on Monday. That statistic, reflecting the percentage of COVID-19 tests taken during a 7-day period that came back positive for COVID-19, was at 29% the previous Friday.

The state reported at least one positive COVID-19 case among residents and/or staff in the past 28 days at the following long-term care facilities in San Juan County:

6:33 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center are reporting 88 new cases of COVID-19 for the Navajo Nation.

One more person has died because of COVID-19 complications, today's report states. The death toll is 1,608.

There have been 48,395 cases since the pandemic began in 2020. This tally includes delayed reporting for 122 cases.

The Department of Health is also reporting that the Omicron variant has been identified in 318 cases based on sample sequencing.

"The Omicron variant has caused this large surge on the Navajo Nation, but the data tells us that the symptoms are less severe for those who are vaccinated and have a booster shot," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update. "We have a high percentage of our Navajo Nation residents who are vaccinated and that is helping to push back on the severity of COVID-19 infections."

The health agencies have been disclosing case numbers from the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS since the pandemic began:

4:53 p.m.: The state health department on Tuesday announced 25 more COVID-19-related deaths, 17 of them recent, and 3,354 new COVID-19 cases in New Mexico.

The state has recorded 455,947 cases since the start of the pandemic, according to a New Mexico Department of Health news release.

The statewide test positivity rate was at 30% Tuesday. It was 30.8% on Monday. That statistic, reflecting the percentage of COVID-19 tests taken during a 7-day period that came back positive for COVID-19, was at 29% the previous Friday.

There have been 6,317 pandemic-related deaths in New Mexico so far, the news release said.

Among the 25 deaths reported Tuesday were two residents of San Juan County, a man in his 70s and a woman in her 60s, who each had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions, the release said.

San Juan County, which has recorded 35,428 cases since the pandemic began, reported 194 new cases Tuesday. The county has recorded 679 deaths as of Jan. 25, the state health department’s website reported.

There were 678 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals Tuesday due to COVID-19 infections. That number was 639 people on and 633 people the previous Friday

“As of today, there are 333,715 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health,” the release said.

6:45 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health has placed 91 chapters on the Navajo Nation under a health advisory notice because of high community transmission, based on COVID-19 cases from Jan. 7 to Jan. 22.

This is the highest number of communities under advisory in recent months. The tribal land is home to 110 chapters that span across Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.

6:24 p.m.: A three-day counting period yielded 14,898 new COVID-19 cases across New Mexico, an average of 4,966 cases per day, the New Department of Health reported Monday .

There were also 33 more deaths announced over the period between Jan. 22 and Jan. 24.

There have been 452,616 COVID-19 cases reported so far in New Mexico and 6,292 pandemic-related deaths statewide.

On Thursday the state reported that 712 people were under treatment in hospitals and infected with the virus.

5:28 p.m.: The number of new COVID-19 infections reported Friday reached a new high in New Mexico. The state health department reported 6,198 new COVID-19 cases and 30 more deaths.

The deaths included two San Juan County residents:

• A man in his 40s who had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

• A man in his 60s from San Juan County who was hospitalized. That death happened more than 30 days ago.

These numbers bring the state’s overall case count since the pandemic started to 437,934, with 6,259 pandemic-related deaths, the New Mexico Department of Health said in a news release.

The new numbers bring New Mexico’s total case count since the pandemic began to 431,887, and its pandemic death toll to 6,229. The 7-Day test positivity rate 28.7% on Thursday.

There were 712 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals Thursday due to COVID-19 infections. There were 626 people hospitalized on Wednesday.

San Juan County reported 353 new cases Thursday. There have been 33,519 cases reported in the county since the pandemic started and 674 pandemic-related deaths as of Thursday.

Press briefings no longer broadcast live

State health officials this week rolled out a new and truncated format for their weekly COVID-19 press briefings. The new process ends the practice of publicly broadcasting the event over social media, requiring reporters instead to register in advance for a ZOOM meeting code. Only news reporters are given access to the event.

The state has also stopped taking live-time questions from reporters after the briefing, demanding questions be submitted a day in advance, and the briefings are supposed to take just 30 minutes. The conference held Wednesday lasted about 40 minutes. The state announced it would post a link to a video of the event after it ended.

“In an attempt to be informative, concise and respectful of everyone’s time, the DOH is choosing this new format,” Acting Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Health Dr. David Scrase said in a news release Tuesday. “Our team of incredible epidemiologists will continue to provide extensive, up-to-date information on the COVID website so education will not be lost. I will still be available to answer the media’s questions and we will continue to share the answers with the public.”

6:23 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health is reporting today 142 new COVID-19 cases for the Navajo Nation as well as identifying 86 communities with high community transmission.

The total number of cases is now 46,114. This includes delayed reporting for 218 cases.

Two more people died of complications from COVID-19, which raises the death toll to 1,602.

There are 42,074 individuals who are considered recovered from the virus. A total of 451,472 tests have been conducted.

The Department of Health issued a health advisory notice for the 86 communities. The placement was based on confirmed cases from Dec. 31 to Jan. 13.

5:09 p.m.: State health officials reported 5,735 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday and 28 more deaths as the state’s 7-day test positivity rate remained just above 28%.

Among the deaths reported Wednesday was a woman in her 30s from San Juan County who had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions, according to a New Mexico Department of Health news release.

There have been 425,920 COVID-19 cases reported in New Mexico since the pandemic began and 6,205 pandemic-related deaths, the release said.

San Juan County, which reported 280 new cases on Wednesday, has recorded 33,171 cases since the start of the pandemic and 674 deaths as of Wednesday, according to the state health department’s website.

The state’s 7-Day positivity rate on Wednesday was 28.3%, a slight decrease from Tuesday’s 28.5%.

10:23 p.m.: A four-day counting period yielded 21,305 new COVID-19 cases across New Mexico, state health officials reported on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s New Mexico Department of Health news release also reported 32 more deaths, including two residents of San Juan County:

• A woman in her 60s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

• A man in his 60s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

The pandemic has claimed 6,177 lives in New Mexico as of Monday.

The state has recorded 420,192 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.

The 7-day test positivity rate was 28.5%. The New Mexico Department of Health reported 5,212 new COVID-19 cases Friday and a 7-day test positivity rate of 27.5% on Friday, Jan. 14.

The four-day counting period came about due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, which caused state offices to close. The state usually releases three days worth of data on Monday.

There were about 5,326 cases per day between Jan. 15 and Jan. 18.

San Juan County, which has seen 32,892 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, added 1,389 new cases during the four-day counting period, which works out to about 347 new cases per day.

There have been 673 pandemic-related deaths in San Juan County since the start of the pandemic, according to the state Department of Health website.

6:52 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health with partnering agencies report 75 new cases of COVID-19 and no recent deaths related to the virus.

Today's update for the Navajo Nation included 68 cases that were not immediately reported to health officials. There have been 45,754 cases since the pandemic started.

The death toll remains at 1,600.

According to the Office of the President and Vice President, which releases the daily updates, the Department of Health issued a report today that shows 85 confirmed cases of the Omicron variant.

The cases are in almost all the service units under the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, the office's news release states.

The release states that the federal government is now offering free at-home COVID-19 test kits.

Every home in the United States is eligible to order four free test kits at no cost. Kits can be ordered at www.covidtests.gov and usually ship in 7-12 days.

Updates for Sunday, Jan. 16

10:04 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 179 new COVID-19 cases and no deaths.

A news release from the Office of the President and Vice President said the pandemic has claimed 1,600 people on the tribal lands.

"There are also 65 delayed reported cases," the release said.

There were no statistical breakdowns available Sunday, but the news release said a full report will be available on Tuesday.

"The Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President held a special online town hall on Friday to provide important updates regarding the rise in COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation," the release said. "The town hall is available to view online at: https://youtu.be/tWwM6Pa1CQw.

President Jonathan Nez said in the release that the tribe's health facilities have increased COVID-19 testing and vaccinations due to the Omicron variant's increasing spread.

"They are also working to get more home testing kits to our people as quickly as possible," Nez said in the release. "The health experts expect the surge in infections to continue through January before we see a decline in cases. We must remain diligent, keep our guard up at all times especially in public, and do more to encourage our loved ones to get fully vaccinated and a booster shot."

Updates for Saturday, Jan. 15

Navajo Nation officials reported 62new COVID-19 cases Saturday, but said there have been no reported deaths from the virus in the last three days.

“Our case numbers have been very high recently, but the number of hospitalizations has not surged and the numbers of deaths has remained low,” Tribal President Jonathan Nez said. “This shows that the COVID-19 vaccines are highly-effective and that they are saving lives."

The Navajo Nation has reported more than 45,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 1,600 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

"Everyone must take extra precautions such as wearing two masks in public, getting fully vaccinated and a booster shot, limiting travel, staying home as much as possible, and avoiding gatherings where people let their guard down," said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez in a news release Saturday.

Updates for Friday, Jan. 14

Case numbers remained high but dropped slightly compared to Thursday as the New Mexico Department of Health reported 5,212 new COVID-19 cases via a news release on Friday.

The state also reported 36 more deaths, including the death of a child in Sandoval county who was under the age of 10. She had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions, the news release said.

Overall there have been 6,145 pandemic-related deaths in New Mexico over the course of the pandemic.

While the state reported 36 more deaths due to the pandemic, 27 of those were recent. A San Juan County resident in her 70s who had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions was among the deaths reported Friday. Her death happened more than 30 days before and was recently recorded.

There were 5,547 new COVID-19 cases recorded in the state on Thursday, a new high number for daily cases. The state’s previous high number was 4,246 new cases on Jan. 7, which had broken a record of 3,675 cases reported on Nov. 19, 2020.

The 7-day positivity rate – reflecting the percentage of people tested for COVID-19 who test positive – stopped its steady rise over the past week and decreased slightly from 27.8% on Thursday to 27.5% on Friday. That number was 27.4% Wednesday. All of those percentages mean that about one in four people who were tested for the virus during those periods tested positive.

Statewide, the health department has recorded 398,939 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic started. They are broken down by county at the end of this report.

San Juan County has reported 31,505 cases since the pandemic began and on Friday reported 444 new cases. The Department of health website reports that there have been 671 pandemic-related deaths in the county since the start of the pandemic as of Jan. 14.

6:21 p.m.: The Navajo Nation sets another record high for new COVID-19 infections for a second day in a row. Health officials report 525 new cases and no recent virus-related deaths today.

But the death toll rose to 1,600 because of a death that happened some unspecified time prior to today's update.

The total number of cases is 44,997. This number includes delayed reporting for 98 cases.

There are 40,579 individuals who are considered recovered from the virus. A total of 442,336 tests have been conducted.

"Stay home, stay safe, and save lives," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update. "Our health care officials are urging all Navajo Nation residents to remain home as much as possible and limit travel while this current Omicron surge continues here on the Navajo Nation and regions and states around us."

He continued, "while the number of cases is high, the data shows that the Omicron variant is not leading to a surge in hospitalizations and deaths. One death is too many, but the number of deaths has remained low during this current surge because the COVID-19 vaccines are effective in preventing severe symptoms and saving lives. Schools on the Navajo Nation are able to return to hybrid or virtual learning and that's a decision that is determined at the local level based on the severity of cases in their respective community."

5:50 p.m.: The Navajo Nation saw its largest number of new COVID-19 infections since the pandemic began with 405 new cases reported by health officials today.

The number includes 148 cases that were not immediately divulged to officials, taking the tribe's tally to 44,374.

"Today's high number of cases should serve as a strong reminder to all of our Navajo people to get fully vaccinated, get a booster shot if you're eligible, wear two protective masks in public, limit travel and stay home as much as possible," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

Officials did not report any additional virus-related deaths. However, there was one death were delayed reporting occurred.

The death toll is now 1,599.

There are 40,301 individuals who are considered recovered from the virus. A total of 439,841 tests have been conducted.

"The Omicron variant is spreading in our communities and it is highly contagious, so we all have to step up our efforts to keep ourselves and others safe," Nez said. "At this point, no one should be visiting people who do not live within your own immediate household and please do not hold large in-person family gatherings such as birthday parties. Schools are strongly urged to offer hybrid learning for students and parents who want to keep their children home and continue their schoolwork virtually. Health officials report that the Omicron variant is more contagious, but the vaccines are effective in preventing severe symptoms and hospitalizations. Keep taking proper precautions and remain home as much as possible."

5:18 p.m.: After a reporting glitch that caused a large number of delayed COVID-19 cases to be reported all at once this week, New Mexico’s state health agency reported case counting is back on track and there were 5,547 new COVID-19 cases recorded in the state on Thursday.

A steadily-rising 7-day positivity rate – reflecting the percentage of people tested for COVID-19 who test positive – reached 27.8% Thursday. That number was 27.4% Wednesday.

The state also announced 36 more deaths related to the pandemic, bringing the state’s total death toll to 6,109. The deaths reported Thursday included a woman in her 70s from San Juan who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

There have been 393,736 cases reported in New Mexico since the pandemic began, the state’s Thursday news release said.

San Juan County reported 416 new cases on Thursday and a total of 31,062 cases have been recorded in the county since the start of the pandemic. The county has seen 669 deaths as of Thursday related to COVID-19.

There were 609 people hospitalized in New Mexico on Thursday due to COVID-19 infections. On Wednesday that number was 569 people hospitalized.

“As of today, there are 321,858 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health,” the news release said.

6:45 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other health agencies for the Navajo Nation report 245 new cases of COVID-19 today.

They also report four more people have died of complications, increasing the death toll to 1,598.

6:45 p.m.: The Navajo Nation has 93 new cases of COVID-19 and one death related to the disease, health officials reported today.

The total number of cases is 43,541. This number includes delayed reporting for 171 cases. The death toll is now 1,594.

There are 40,199 individuals who are considered recovered from the virus. A total of 433,201 tests have been conducted.

The Navajo Department of Health reported 19 confirmed cases of the Omicron variant.

The cases were found in the Chinle, Kayenta and Tuba City service units under the Navajo Area Indian Health Service and in areas served by Sage Memorial Hospital and the Utah Navajo Health System.

The department also issued two public health emergency orders that reaffirm the "safer at home" order and place schools under red status because of the increase in Omicron variant cases.

Tribal President Jonathan Nez signed an executive order that mandates employees under the executive branch provide proof of booster shots for COVID-19 by Jan. 24 or undergo testing every two weeks.

4:43 p.m.: There were 2,932 new COVID-19 cases reported in New Mexico Tuesday, according to a news release from state health officials.

The New Mexico Department of Health also reported 25 more deaths, one of them a woman in her 70s from San Juan County who had been hospitalized. Sixteen of the 25 deaths reported Tuesday were recent, the rest happened more than 30 days ago.

The statewide 7-day positivity rate was 26.2% on Tuesday, a slight increase of Monday’s 25.8%.

The state has recorded 381,295 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began. There have been 6,045 pandemic-related deaths in New Mexico.

San Juan County has recorded 30,274 cases since the pandemic began and added 209 new cases on Tuesday. The state Health Department website says the county has had 666 COVID-19-related deaths since the start of the pandemic, and 26,931 residents have recovered. The total number of tests administered in the county was 372,316 as of Tuesday.

There were 584 people under treatment in New Mexico hospitals Tuesday due to COVID-19 infections.

8:26 p.m.: A three-day reporting period yielded 9,284 new COVID-19 cases across New Mexico and 37 more pandemic-related deaths, state health officials reported Monday

The state’s daily news release also said the 7-Day positivity rate stood at 25.8% on Monday. The last reported rate, on Friday, was 23.2%.

The state has logged 378,363 cases since the pandemic began, and 6,020 COVID-19-related deaths.

San Juan County has recorded 30,068 cases since the pandemic began and reported 679 new cases during the three-day counting period that ended Jan. 10

The Navajo Nation has reported 220 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, but no additional deaths related to the virus.

Tribal officials said the number of confirmed cases on the vast reservation since the pandemic began now total 42,887 as of Saturday including 45 delayed reported cases.

The known death toll stands at 1,593.

Navajo Nation officials reported 270 cases and one death on Friday.

“Cases of the omicron variant are much higher in border towns and cities located off the Navajo Nation,” tribal President Jonathan Nez said in a statement Saturday. “The omicron variant is much more contagious than the original strain of COVID-19 and the delta variant.

“The good news is that the COVID-19 vaccines are highly-effective in pushing back on the symptoms and reducing the chances of being hospitalized if you do get the virus,” Nez added. “The data shows that the vaccines save lives. 7:02 p.m.: COVID-19 case numbers in New Mexico blew past a record set in November 2020 on Friday with health officials reporting 4,246 new COVID-19 cases, according to a news release from the New Mexico Department of Health.

That number is a substantial increase over Thursday’s 3,231 new COVID-19 cases.

There were 2,514 cases reported Wednesday.

KOB TV reported Friday that the 3,675 cases reported on Nov. 19, 2020, were the pandemic’s previous daily case count high mark.

The state also reported 14 recent deaths, eight of those in Bernalillo county and none in San Juan County.

The numbers brought the state’s case numbers since the pandemic began to 369,113. There have been 5,983 pandemic-related deaths in New Mexico.

7:14 p.m.: Health experts for the Navajo Nation reported today 294 new cases of COVID-19 and no additional virus-related deaths.

The total number of cases is 42,324. This number includes delayed reporting for 59 cases. The death toll remains at 1,592.

Because of the increase in COVID-19 infections, the Office of the President and Vice President will have a town hall at 10 a.m. on Jan. 7 to talk about COVID-19.

The presentation will livestream on the Nez-Lizer Facebook page and YouTube channel.

"The rise in new COVID-19 cases is very alarming, but we should not panic because we have the vaccines to help push back on the variants and we know what precautions we have to take to protect ourselves and others," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the news release. "The Omicron variant has been found within the Navajo Nation and it continues to spread very rapidly across the country. As we have stated all along, the safest place to be is at home here on the Navajo Nation where we have a face mask mandate, extra precautions in businesses and other safety measures in place that are not in effect in border towns and other cities."

5:30 p.m.: New COVID-19 case counts and hospitalization numbers continued to rise on Thursday, as did the pandemic’s death toll.

The New Mexico Department of Health ‘s Thursday news release reported 3,231 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, 717 more cases than the 2,514 cases reported Wednesday.

The Thursday release also reported 36 more pandemic-related deaths, 24 of those being recent and the rest having happened more than 30 days ago.

Two of those deaths were unidentified San Jan County residents. Both were men in their 60s who had been hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

The state's 7-Day positivity rate, reflecting the percentage of people who were tested in New Mexico for COVID-19 who test positive for the virus, rose to 21.7% Thursday. That number was 20.6% on Wednesday, 19.8% on Tuesday and 17.9% on Monday.

The new numbers brought the state’s total case count since the pandemic began to 364,861. There have been 5,969 deaths in New Mexico related to COVID-19.

San Juan County, which has recorded 29,146 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, reported 188 new cases Thursday. The county has recorded 661 pandemic-related deaths, including the two reported on Thursday.

10:29 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 168 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation Wednesday and two deaths.

"The total number of deaths is now 1,592," a news release from the Office of the President and Vice President said. "The report indicates that 39,602 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. 422,580 COVID-19 tests have been administered."

There have been 41,971 COVID-19 cases recorded since the pandemic began, including 24 cases in which reporting was delayed, the release said.

“We have a high number of new infections reported today. It’s more important than ever to get fully vaccinated and get a booster shot to help prevent severe illness if you contract COVID-19," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in the release. "The Omicron variant is highly contagious, but we know what we have to do to protect ourselves and others."

Nez urged mask wearing, social distancing, hand-washing and limiting travel as steps to thwart transmission of the virus.

"We have to remain diligent and keep pushing back on this virus in order to prevent more outbreaks and to save more lives," Nez said.

5:07 p.m.: The state’s 7-day test positivity rate climbed past 20 percent Wednesday as state health authorities reported 2,514 new COVID-19 cases and 36 more pandemic-related deaths.

The state had reported 1,654 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday and 31 deaths.

The latest numbers pushed the number of cases on the Navajo Nation since the pandemic began to 41,779 including 87 delayed reported cases.

Tribal President Jonathan Nez said the omicron variant was detected in the Utah portion of the Navajo Nation this week.

Based on cases from Dec. 17-30, the Navajo Department of Health has issued an advisory for 42 communities due to uncontrolled spread of the coronavirus. (See the list in our Jan. 3 update below.)

“As reported by many health officials, the omicron variant is more contagious than the original strain of the virus and the delta variant,” Nez said in a statement Tuesday. “If you go into public places with large numbers of people, health officials recommend wearing two masks due to the higher transmissibility of the omicron variant. 5:28 p.m.: Figures released Tuesday by New Mexico state health officials show the 7-day average rate of COVID-19 tests coming in as positive across the state has jumped from around 10% in December to just under 20 percent as of Jan. 4.

11:30 p.m.: The Navajo Nation reported 10 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and no deaths Monday, but tribal health officials say the first case of the omicron variant has been detected, The Associated Press reported Monday.

Based on cases from Dec. 17-30, the Navajo Department of Health has issued an advisory for 42 communities due to uncontrolled spread of the coronavirus.

The latest numbers pushed the number of cases on the Navajo Nation to 41,657 since the pandemic began.

The death roll remains at 1,590.

“The first known case of the omicron variant has been found here on the Navajo Nation,” tribal President Jonathan Nez said in a statement Monday. “This is not a time to panic, but we must step up our efforts to take the necessary precautions to limit the spread of this new variant in our communities.

“Health officials recommend wearing two masks in public due to how quickly the omicron variant has spread in other parts of the world. In many parts of the country, more and more health care workers are having to isolate due to the spread of the omicron variant,” Nez added.

The first known case of the Omicron variant came from a sample collected from mid-December 2021 from the Utah Navajo Health System, according to the Navajo Epidemiology Center, which is working under the Navajo Department of Health, the news release stated.

“Additional information will be forthcoming as more is learned,” the release said.

The pandemic has so far claimed 5,866 people in New Mexico, 653 of them San Juan County residents.

Totals statewide reached 357,480 cases reported since the start of the pandemic, 28,697 of them in San Juan County.

There were 281 new cases reported in San Juan County over the four-day period and no new deaths.

The 7-Day statewide test positivity rate was 17.9% for the period between Friday, Dec. 31, and Monday, Jan. 3.

There were 472 people hospitalized in New Mexico due to COVID-19 infections on Monday.

“As of today, there are 311,304 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health,” the news release said.

The state reported at least one positive COVID-19 case among residents and/or staff in the past 28 days at the following long-term care facilities in San Juan County:

• The Bridge of Farmington in Farmington

• Genesis San Juan Center in Farmington

• Life Care Farmington

The 11 COVID-19-related deaths reported Monday included two recent deaths:

• A woman in her 70s from Doña Ana County who resided at the Blue Horizon Assisted Living Facility.

• A man in his 30s from Valencia County who had been hospitalized.

Nine other deaths reported Monday happened more than 30 days before:

• A man in his 50s from Bernalillo County who was hospitalized.

• A man in his 60s from Bernalillo County who was hospitalized.

• A woman in her 80s from Bernalillo County who had underlying conditions and was resided at the Princeton Place facility in Albuquerque.

• A woman in her 90s from Bernalillo County who had underlying conditions.

• A man in his 70s from Eddy County who was hospitalized.

• A woman in her 70s from Rio Arriba County who was hospitalized.

• A man in his 90s from Santa Fe County who was hospitalized.

• A man in his 70s from Valencia County who was hospitalized.

• A woman in her 70s from Valencia County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.
