San Juan County, Navajo COVID: What you should know about virus spread in November

After low numbers of COVID-19 cases most of September, cases began increasing in October and numbers have skyrocketed as November continues. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham responded on Nov. 13 when she announced a two-week stay-at-home order and restricted non-essential businesses as well as allowing curbside pickup and delivery services at restaurants but prohibiting on-site dining.

The current public health order was set to expire Monday, but officials said its provisions will remain in effect until a new framework takes effect. The state will move on Dec. 2 to new “red to green” tiered county-by-county risk system for reopening. Counties can shed public health restrictions if they meet key metrics related to positivity and spread rates within their boundaries.

Under the system, counties where the virus is more prevalent will operate under more restrictive measures while those where spread is suppressed will face fewer restrictions.

The state Health Department maintains an official map displaying each county’s level on its COVID-19 webpage. Red signifies very high risk where average daily cases are 8 or more per 100,000 and test positivity is 5% or greater. Yellow is high risk and green is medium risk.

The map is updated every other week to capture an average over time that more accurately conveys the spread rate, officials said.

Death toll climbs

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Oct. 30 ordered flags to fly at half-staff starting Monday for a week of mourning due to the state death count topping 1,000 residents. She called the toll “an unfathomable tragedy,” saying the drumbeat of a few more deaths every day should not diminish the acute feeling of loss. By Nov. 15 that death toll rose to 1,215. The death toll stood at 1,504 on Nov. 27.

Under the amended emergency public health order, in-person services for nonessential business transactions were ordered to close for two weeks until Nov. 30, and residents are instructed to stay home except for business "essential to health, safety and welfare," including working from home whenever possible.

Businesses defined as essential — such as grocery stories, pharmacies, laundromats, liquor stores and automobile and bicycle maintenance facilities — are required by the order to minimize staffing as well as occupancy, limiting those present to either 25 percent of their maximum fire code capacity or 75 people, whichever is smaller. Grocery stores must be closed between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., and certain categories of items such as medications, durable medical equipment, baby formula, diapers, sanitary care products and hygiene products, are to be limited to three items per individual to avoid runs on available supplies.

State health officials have renewed their pleas that people adhere to the public health order, which calls for residents to stay home whenever possible, limit contact with others and wear face coverings, among other things.

Human Services Department Cabinet Secretary Dr. David Scrase said last month that he believes the public health orders the state has issued are the right ones to control the spread, but he emphasized that people need to adhere to these orders and avoid large gatherings.

Updates for Monday, Nov. 30

9:48 p.m.: The Navajo Nation saw 168 new cases of COVID-19 today and no recent deaths.

The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

The latest figures and tallies were released by the Office of the President and Vice President and it included reports that 9,188 people have recovered while 158,451 tests have been administered.

4 p.m.: A Farmington zip code was listed as one of the zip codes with the most COVID-19 cases in a press release from the governor's office.

The 87401 zip code, which encompasses much of Farmington, had 42 new cases of COVID-19.

There were 136 San Juan County residents who tested positive for COVID-19 on Nov. 30, according to the New Mexico Department of Health

3:00 p.m.: Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said 1,684 New Mexicans received positive COVID-19 test results on Nov. 30, raising the total number of people who have tested positive this year to 97,095. In addition, the state saw 28 additional COVID-19 fatalities, raising the total number of deaths to 1,568.

There are 876 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in New Mexico and 146 of those people are on ventilators.

Updates for Sunday, Nov. 29

10:13 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 177 new COVID-19 positive cases for the Navajo Nation and five more deaths on Sunday.

“The total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 16,427, including 27 delayed unreported cases,” the Office of the President and Vice President said in a release Sunday.

The death toll has risen to 653.

“We brought our numbers down several months ago and we did it by staying home and isolating the virus – that’s the remedy that we have right now and we can bring our numbers down once again,” said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez. “Until there is an approved vaccine that is widely available, we’re going to have to remain strong and be more disciplined to protect our family members.”

Recovered individuals number 8,676 and 157,860 COVID-19 tests were given since the start of the pandemic.

7:11 p.m.: The state health department on Sunday announced 1,443 additional COVID-19 cases and 13 new deaths related to COVID-19.That brings the statewide case total to 95,417 as of Sunday.

The number of virus-related deaths among New Mexico residents is now 1,540.

As of Sunday 919 people were hospitalized in the state for COVID-19 and 32,050 COVID-19 patents have recovered.

Of the 13 new deaths, two of them were San Juan County residents:

• A woman in her 40s who was hospitalized and was a resident of the Aztec Healthcare facility in Aztec.

• A man in his 80s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions. The individual was a resident of the Aztec Healthcare facility in Aztec.

New Mexico has totaled 93,982 cases of the virus.

8:13 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 91 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation and three more deaths.

The total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 15,954, including four delayed unreported cases.

The numbers bring the death toll to 648 as of Friday.

There have been 8,609 recoveries, and 155,113 COVID-19 tests were administered.

“We love our people and that’s why we take the advice of the health care experts to implement restrictions to help reduce the spread of COVID-19,” said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez. “The Navajo Nation remains in a stay-at-home lockdown, which means the only time anyone should leave their home is for essential items such as food, medication, or hygiene products.

Nez again cited high numbers of cases in neighboring states as a reason to stay home and stay safe. “You do not want your family to experience this potentially deadly virus. Stay home, wear a mask, practice social distancing, avoid crowds, and wash your hands often.”

6:15 p.m.: New Mexico health officials Friday announced 2,076 additional COVID-19 cases and 35 new deaths related to COVID-19.

The state has reported more than 91,850 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began. The death toll stands at 1,504.

Four of the people whose deaths were announced Friday were from San Juan County:

• A woman in her 70s from San Juan County who was hospitalized.

• A man in his 70s from San Juan County.

• A man in his 80s who was a resident of Aztec Healthcare in Aztec.

• A second man in his 80s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions

While New Mexico’s daily count of confirmed COVID-19 cases has been trending down recently from the record highs reported earlier this month, nearly every county remained deep in the red zone Friday as the state was just days away from launching its new “red to green” system for reopening, the Associated Press reported.

State officials announced that the transition will begin next Wednesday to a tiered county-by-county risk system. Counties will be able to shed burdensome public health restrictions as soon as they meet key metrics related to positivity and spread rates within their boundaries. Only Los Alamos County in north-central New Mexico is anywhere near meeting the benchmarks.

“It’s been a difficult year and an especially difficult past month," Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a statement. "We must remain as vigilant as ever to contain and beat the virus. We also must look for ways to lessen the burden on our communities wherever possible, while never swerving from our top priority — protecting New Mexicans and saving lives.”

There are 874 people hospitalized in the state due to COVID-19 and 31,102 COVID-19 patients are designated as having recovered by the health department.

3:54 p.m.: New Mexico had 1,708 new cases of COVID-19 reported on Nov. 26, along with 18 new deaths as the state starts to approach 1,500 total deaths.

The New Mexico Department of Health recorded 119 new cases of the coronavirus for San Juan County along with one new death.

A total of 5,632 cases of COVID-19 have been reported for the county. A man in his 70s was the new death reported for the county.

There has been a total of 226 deaths from COVID-19 in San Juan County, according to the state health department dashboard.

The number of New Mexicans have tested positive for the virus this year is now at 89,796. Of those people, 1,469 have died.

There are 880 patients hospitalized in the state.

The total number of cases is 15,616 and includes 21 previously unannounced cases. Two more deaths were reported, raising the death toll to 640.

There are 8,588 individuals who have recovered and 153,292 tests that have been administered.

"This Thanksgiving Day holiday, please be safe and do not hold family gatherings with anyone outside of your immediate household. By inviting guests and other relatives into your home, you are creating substantial risks for you and your family members. We have to be diligent and make good choices, which aren't the easiest," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in a press release today.

Updates for Tuesday, Nov. 24

10:15 p.m.: Health officials on the Navajo Nation reported 121 new cases of COVID-19 and seven deaths related to the virus today.

There were also 17 previously unannounced cases. That figure along with the new cases brings the total number of cases to 15,374. The death toll is 638.

"Public health officials continue to urge the public not to hold in-person gatherings with non-household members on Thanksgiving Day due to COVID-19 risks," the press release from Office of the President and Vice President states.

Hospitals and clinics operated by the Navajo Area Indian Health Service and through 638 contracts will continue drive-thru testing, except on Thanksgiving Day, according to the release.

The latest figures were released by the president's office and included reports that 8,271 people have recovered while 151,008 tests have been administered.

4:09 p.m.: New Mexico recorded another high number of new daily COVID-19 cases, as the New Mexico Department of Health reported 2,107 new cases and 28 new deaths on Nov. 24.

Bernalillo County had 541 new cases. San Juan County added 127 new cases, while McKinley County added 184 new cases. Sandoval County added 172 new cases, while Rio Arriba County added 37 new cases.

The 28 new deaths include a male in his 70s from McKinley County, a male in his 80s from McKinley County and a male in his 80s from Rio Arriba County, all of which were hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

4 p.m.: New Mexico recorded another giant number of new daily COVID-19 cases, as the New Mexico Department of Health reported 2,259 new cases and 17 new deaths on Nov. 23.

Bernalillo County had 748 new cases. San Juan County added 149 new cases, while McKinley County added 168 new cases. Sandoval County added 122 new cases.

The new cases mean that 84,148 New Mexicans have tested positive for the virus this year. Of those people, 1,400 have died.

There are 846 patients hospitalized in the state.

Updates for Sunday, Nov. 22

11:30 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other health agencies on Nov. 22, reported an "all-time high of 383 new COVID-19 positive cases for the Navajo Nation and five more deaths," the Office of the President and Vice President said in a release.

The number of positive COVID-19 cases reached 15,039, including 42 delayed reported cases, the release stated.

The death toll reached 631 on Sunday. There are 8,131 people who were infected but have recovered from COVID-19, and 147,793 COVID-19 tests were administered.

President Jonathan Nez warned against group celebrations during the holidays.

"With the Thanksgiving Day holiday upon us, we have to do what is best for our families and that’s to celebrate with only those that live within our own household," Nez said in the release. "Please do not invite family members from other households and please do not have any in-person guests and that is for your own safety and health."

Nez noted skyrocketing numbers of COVID-19 cases in communities surrounding the Navajo Nation as a reason to continue adherence to social distancing rules the ongoing three-week lockdown on tribal lands.

On Sunday, the release stated, the New Mexico reported 2,468 new cases of COVID-19, Arizona reported 4,331 new cases and Utah reported 3,197 cases.

"Today, we have 383 new COVID-19 cases here on the Navajo Nation," Nez said in the release. "We have community spread and uncontrollable spread (in) most of our communities and the numbers are even higher off the Navajo Nation. …We have to recommit to fighting COVID-19 and tell our loved ones to take this virus seriously."

11 p.m.: The New Mexico Health Department on Sunday reported that there are 2,468 new COVID-19 cases and there were 33 new deaths.

The state’s totals have risen to 81,896 cases with 1,383 known deaths. San Juan County has recorded 5,126 cases since the pandemic began.

Health officials on Saturday reported 2,342 new coronavirus cases and 25 deaths.

Among the 33 deaths reported on Sunday were six San Juan County residents:

• A woman in her 50s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

• A woman in her 60s with no underlying conditions noted.

• A man in his 70s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

• A man in his 70s who was a resident of the Aztec Healthcare facility in Aztec.

• A man in his 80s who had underlying conditions and was a resident of the San Juan Center in Farmington.

• A man in his 90s who was a resident of the Aztec Healthcare facility in Aztec.

The state also reported the death of a teenage female from McKinley County who had underlying conditions.

On Sunday there were 845 people hospitalized in in the state due to COVID-19. Also as of Sunday 28,857 COVID-19 patients were designated as having recovered since the start of the pandemic.

Updates for Friday, Nov. 20

6:45 p.m.: Health officials on the Navajo Nation reported 351 new cases today, shattering the previous record for new coronavirus infections in a single day.

"On May 13, we had 238 cases reported in one day and today, we far surpassed that total with 351 new cases reported. This is not only devastating, but it indicates that the uncontrolled spread of the virus is impacting all communities on the Navajo Nation and in nearby border towns and cities," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in the press release from his office that listed the latest numbers.

He called for leaders in Arizona to implement a mandate to wear face masks, noting the state had 4,471 new cases today.

Residents on the tribal land remain under a public health emergency order to stay at home through Dec. 6.

"If you do not have an emergency, if you're not in immediate need of food, and if you're not an essential worker that is required to report to work, then you are mandated to stay home. We have to do more, and we have to take it upon ourselves to isolate the virus," Nez said.

The press release states that the Navajo Police Department will increase enforcement and will patrol roads and communities for compliance with the health order.

The new deaths include two males in their 70s from McKinley County.

Updates for Wednesday, Nov. 18

6:40 p.m.: Health agencies on the Navajo Nation reported another update that lists more than 100 new cases of COVID-19. Today, there were 135 new cases as well as eight deaths.

Residents remain under a stay-at-home order with travel restricted to essential or emergencies while essential businesses can operate from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily due to the rise in coronavirus infections.

"Unless you are an essential employee, or if you have an emergency, or are in immediate need of food or groceries or other essential items like medication, then you should be at home at all times," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in the update, which was released by his office.

"No one should be going into a store for a bag of chips or a soda and we shouldn't be taking kids or our entire family into stores to shop – essential items only," he added.

The total number of cases is 13,880 while the death toll is 613. The update states that 8,011 people have recovered, and 141,751 tests have been administered.

Statewide, the New Mexico Department of Health reported 2,897 new cases, the largest single day increase since the pandemic began. In addition, there were 26 more COVID-19 fatalities reported on Nov. 18.

8 p.m.: Today's report by the Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center lists 146 new cases of COVID-19 and two more deaths related to the virus.

There are now 13,744 cases for the Navajo Nation and the death toll is 605.

The health department identified 55 communities with uncontrolled spread of COVID-19, based on information from Oct. 30 to Nov. 12.

"This invisible monster known as COVID-19 is devastating our country and the Navajo Nation. We cannot be complacent and careless about where we go, who we interact with, and the everyday choices we make. We love our Navajo people and we want everyone to be safe and healthy, but there are far too many people that continue to travel, to hold gatherings, and put themselves at unnecessary risk of catching the virus," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in a press release from his office.

The agencies shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

The latest figures were released by the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President and it showed that 8,011 people have recovered while 141,166 tests have been administered.

4 p.m.: The New Mexico Department of Health reported record-breaking numbers of new COVID-19 cases on Nov. 17. State officials say 2,112 New Mexicans tested positive for the virus and there were 28 additional COVID-19 fatalities.

4 p.m.: The New Mexico Department of Health reported 1,259 new cases of COVID-19 on Nov. 16 and 21 additional deaths.

The new cases raise the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the virus since March to 65,454. Of those more than 65,000 people, 1,236 have died.

The new deaths reported on Nov. 16 include two San Juan County residents, one in his 60s and the other in her 50s. Both had underlying medical conditions and were hospitalized.

Forty San Juan County residents tested positive for the coronavirus on Nov. 16 and, in neighboring counties, Sandoval County had 58 new cases, McKinley County had 52 new cases and Rio Arriba County had 18 new cases.

There are 738 people hospitalized in New Mexico.

9:18 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 117 new COVID-19 positive cases on the Navajo Nation Sunday and four more deaths.

The death toll reached 602 Sunday, and 7,926 patients have recovered. There have been 138,332 COVID-19 tests administered and the number of positive COVID-19 cases is 13,373, including seven delayed unreported cases, the Office of the President and Vice president said in a release Sunday night.

On Nov. 16 the Navajo Nation’s new public health emergency orders will mandate a three-week stay-at-home lockdown for the whole Navajo Nation, “implement new safety provisions and requirements for businesses, and calls for schools to implement online learning only, to help reduce the uncontrollable spread of COVID-19,” the release stated.

The release noted high rates of transmission in neighboring states, with New Mexico reporting 1,033 new cases, Arizona reporting 2,383 new cases and Utah reporting 2,667 cases.

“Unfortunately, it appears that this pandemic is going to get worse before it gets better,” President Jonathan Nez said in the release. “The projections from our health care experts indicate that the Navajo Nation, as well as the country, is on an upward trajectory in terms of new cases of COVID-19. The sooner we all do our part to stay home consistently, avoid gatherings, and social distance, the sooner we will reach our peak and hopefully begin to see a decline in new cases.”

Nez also discussed the consequences of inaction.

“If our Navajo citizens don’t abide by the three-week stay-at-home lockdown, then we’re going to see even more cases and our health care system is going to be overwhelmed very quickly,” he said “We have to do it ourselves.”

On Monday, an Executive Order goes into effect closing government offices except for essential employees for three weeks.

8:51 p.m.: Health officials in New Mexico reported 1,033 new COVID-19 cases Sunday and seven more deaths as preparations began for a two-week near-lockdown ordered by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to help curb the spread of the coronavirus, the Associated Press reported.

The latest figures increased the statewide total to 64,201 cases and the known death toll to 1,215.

New Mexico Department of Health officials said due to a technical lapse from some private labs, Sunday’s numbers only reflect a partial total . The delayed results will be reported as soon as they are received and confirmed.

Grisham, a Democrat, on Friday ordered many businesses to close and asked residents to stay home starting Monday following a steady increase in infections, hospitalizations and deaths.

Under the governor’s order, grocery stores, pharmacies, day cares, gas stations and other essential businesses can still operate. But they are being told to minimize operations and in-person staffing to the greatest extent possible. Restaurants may provide curbside pickup and delivery services, but on-site dining is prohibited.

The state court system has postponed the start of any new civil and criminal jury trials until the end of the year. Appellate, district, metropolitan and magistrate courts will remain open while following guidelines to reduce transmission risks.

There were 506 patients hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19 Sunday and 25,089 people diagnosed with COVID-19 have recovered.

1:10 p.m.: Starting Monday, all New Mexicans will be instructed to shelter in place, leaving their houses only for necessities.

Non-essential businesses and non-profits must cease in person activities on Monday. Essential businesses must reduce operations and in-person work force as much as possible.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham warned that the state is at a breaking point. There have been 182 COVID-19 deaths in the past two weeks, a 143% increase.

At the same time, cases remain high.

“Yesterday we hit another record high. We’ve been doing that every day,” she said.

The new orders last through Nov. 30. The governor described the new orders as the state hitting "reset."

Onsite dining is prohibited, but restaurants can provide food through delivery and curbside pickup.

After Nov. 30, the state will work on a county-by-county basis to establish tiers for reopening.

This would allow counties with low-levels of spread to have more economic activity while counties with more spread would face stricter measures.

6:05 p.m.: The Navajo Nation had another day where the number of new cases for COVID-19 was more than 100.

The new fatalities that were reported on Nov. 12 include a resident of Aztec Heath Care who was in her 50s and hospitalized. She also had underlying medical conditions.

Updates for Wednesday, Nov. 11

8:30 p.m.: The Navajo Nation had 98 new cases of COVID-19 today, raising the total to 12,818.

The latest report was released a few hours after the Navajo Department of Health alerted residents in 34 communities about uncontrolled spread of COVID-19. The department recommends residents take precautions to protect themselves from the new virus.

"We have to do better, and we have to hold ourselves and our loved ones accountable," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in a press release from his office.

Today's report by the department of health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center listed one more death related to COVID-19. The death toll is 596.

The agencies shifted reporting the number of cases in each county that comprises tribal land in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah to reporting cases in the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS.

The latest figures were released by the president's office and included reports that 7,828 people have recovered while 134,358 tests have been administered.

4 p.m.: The New Mexico Department of Health reported 1,500 new COVID-19 cases on Veteran’s Day as well as 14 additional fatalities.

Bernalillo County had the most new cases with 418 residents testing positive for the disease. Meanwhile, Dona Ana County had 311 new cases.

In the northwest region, San Juan County had 56 residents test positive while McKinley County had 69 new cases and Rio Arriba County had 19 new cases. Sandoval County had 61 new cases.

The new cases mean that 59,034 New Mexicans have contracted the virus this year and, of those people, 1,158 have died.

There are 481 patients hospitalized in state with COVID-19.

11:38 p.m.: Navajo Nation health officials on Tuesday reported 79 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and one additional death, The Associated Press reported.

The latest figures bring the total number of known cases to 12,720 with 595 known deaths.

Tribal health officials said 133,733 people have been tested for COVID-19 since the pandemic started and 7,802 have recovered.

The Navajo Nation Department of Health previously issued a health advisory warning to residents about the uncontrolled spread of the coronavirus that has affected 29 communities throughout the reservation, which spans more than 27,000 square miles (70,000 square kilometers) in parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.

Officials have urged residents to wear face masks, practice social distancing and limit gatherings to less than five people.

A daily curfew from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. also remains in effect on the Navajo Nation.

9:39 p.m.: Farmington Municipal Schools announced Nov. 10 that the following district students have tested positive for Covid-19:

• 1 at-school student at Apache Elementary

• 1 at-home student at Farmington Preschool Academy East

• 3 at-home students at Farmington High School

• 1 at-home student at Heights Middle School

• 2 at-school students at Ladera del Norte Elementary School

The district said in its release that all students or staff in close contact have been notified, as has the New Mexico Public Education Department and/or the NM Environmental Department.

Updates for Sunday, Nov. 8

9:06 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, in coordination with other agencies, reported 124 new COVID-19 positive cases for the Navajo Nation and two more deaths.

There are now 12,571 positive COVID-19 cases. As of Sunday the pandemic’s death toll is now 593. Officials say 7,641 patients have recovered from the virus and 131,873 tests were given.

“The numbers are not looking good for us here on the Navajo Nation and across the country,” said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez. “Considering the hardships and adversities that our ancestors endured and overcame, it shouldn’t be difficult to stay home, wear a mask, wash your hands, social distance, and to avoid family gatherings and large crowds. We have to be stronger, we have to be more disciplined, and we have to be more optimistic.”

The Nez-Lizer Administration will host an online town hall on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 10a.m. on the Nez-Lizer Facebook page.

6:37 p.m.: For the third consecutive day, New Mexico health officials reported nearly 1,300 additional COVID-19 cases on Sunday. Sixteen of those cases were in San Juan County.

There were also 14 additional deaths. Among them was a man in his 80s from San Juan County who was a resident of the Aztec Healthcare facility in Aztec.

State Department of Health officials said there were 1,214 new coronavirus cases Sunday. There were 1,287 additional cases Saturday, a one-day record that was the same number reported Friday. But they said Saturday that 10 of the cases reported Friday had turned out to be duplicates or not lab-confirmed.

With those adjustments and the latest reported cases, the statewide case total now has reached 54,881 with 1,118 known deaths.

As of Sunday, there were 437 people hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19 and 79 percent of general beds at New Mexico hospitals were occupied. That includes 74 percent of ICU beds across the state. This includes patients hospitalized for COVID-19 and other illnesses.

There are 23,205 COVID-19 patients who have recovered.

The number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested. Studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.

New Mexico officials have warned that new records would be set over the coming weeks as the rate of spread remains high.

10:23 p.m.: Health officials for the Navajo Nation are reporting 112 new cases of COVID-19 today. The new cases rise the total to 12,195. The total includes one previously unannounced case.

According to the report from the Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center, there were two more deaths. There are now 588 deaths related to COVID-19.

4:05 p.m.: The 862 new cases of COVID-19 reported on Nov. 5 include 26 San Juan County residents, 38 Sandoval County residents, 14 Rio Arriba County residents and 26 McKinley County residents.

Human Services Department Secretary Dr. David Scrase said New Mexicans can expect to see more than 13 COVID-19 deaths per day over the next two weeks. Meanwhile, the state saw 11,354 new cases of COVID-19 in the past two weeks and 316 of those cases were in San Juan County.

3:20 p.m.: As the state of New Mexico has seen a 95% increase in hospitalizations in the last two weeks, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said there have already been moments when there weren’t any intensive care unit beds available for critical care in the metro areas.

She said it is too late to reverse the trajectory in November, however New Mexicans still have the power to break the chain of spread and decrease the numbers of cases going into December.

Lujan Grisham reminded people not to spend time with non-household family members, which she said is one of the leading causes of the high case counts in the state. She said people should wear masks at all times when out of their house and even encouraged people to wear masks in their house. Additionally, she said people should maintain social distancing.

3:10 p.m.: “We are not trending anywhere in the right direction,” said Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in a press conference today.

She said that November is going to be a hard month for New Mexico as cases continue to remain high and people are dying of COVID-19.

She said 862 people tested positive for the coronavirus on Nov. 5 and the daily positivity rate is 7.6%.

Of the 51,110 New Mexicans who have tested positive for the virus since March, 1,082 of them have died, including the 23 COVID-19 fatalities reported on Nov. 5.

There are 400 people hospitalized in New Mexico and 59 of them are on ventilators.

Updates for Wednesday, Nov. 4

9:40 p.m.: Health agencies on the Navajo Nation reported 131 new cases today and no recent deaths related to COVID-19.

There are now 12,080 cases and 586 deaths related to the disease. The report also states that 7,613 people have recovered while 127, 901 tests have been administered.

The Navajo Department of Health has implemented 56-hour lockdowns for the next two weekends due to uncontrolled spread in 29 communities on the reservation.

Under the new public health emergency order, gas stations, grocery stores, laundromats, restaurants and food establishments will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the lockdowns.

4 p.m.: More than 50,000 New Mexicans have contracted COVID-19 since March, reaching that milestone on Nov. 4 when the New Mexico Department of Health reported 1,022 new cases of the coronavirus and 14 additional deaths.

In total, 50,251 New Mexicans have contracted the virus and, of those people, 1,059 have died.

The new cases include 52 San Juan County residents.

The state also reports that one of the 14 fatalities was a resident at Aztec Healthcare in her 70s who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.

There are 393 people hospitalized in the state with COVID-19.

6:55 p.m.: The Navajo Nation saw 72 new cases of COVID-19 today, as reported by the Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center.

The latest cases rise the total to 11,947. Two more deaths were listed in today's report, increasing the death toll to 586.

The counties with the highest number of new cases were Bernalillo and Doña Ana counties with 262 and 270 cases respectively. There were also 37 new cases identified among inmates held by the New Mexico Corrections Department at the Penitentiary of New Mexico in Santa Fe County.

State health officials also reported nine additional fatalities. The new cases raise the number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the virus to 49,240 and 1,045 of those people have died.

There are 401 patients hospitalized in New Mexico with COVID-19.

The total number of positive cases is 11,875 and the total number of COVID-related deaths is 584.

The latest figures and tallies were released by the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President and it included reports that 7,568 people have recovered while 126,331 tests have been administered.

4 p.m.: The New Mexico Department of Health reported 877 new cases of COVID-19 on Nov. 2 as well as ten additional deaths. The new cases raise the number of New Mexicans who have contracted the virus to 48,104 with 1,036 of those people dying of the disease.

The new cases include 30 San Juan County residents.

There are 382 people hospitalized in the state with COVID-19. As of Nov. 2, 69% of intensive care unit beds were occupied as were 74% of the general beds for adults in hospitals in New Mexico. The percentages include both patients with COVID-19 and patients without the virus.

12:06 p.m.: Navajo Nation health officials are reporting 73 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 but no deaths, The Asociated Press reported. The latest figures bring the total number of cases to 11,828 and the known death toll to 581.

Tribal health officials said 125,851 people on the vast reservation that covers parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah have been tested for COVID-19 since the pandemic started and 7,546 have recovered.

A shelter-in-place order, mask mandate, daily curfews and weekend lockdowns remain in effect on the Navajo Nation.

Meanwhile, the tribe is considering legislation to permit casinos and other gaming facilities to re-open at 50% capacity. Without the legislation, Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise likely will be forced to permanently close and layoff all employees by the end of this month.

Updates for Sunday, Nov. 1

6:37 p.m.: New Mexico health officials on Sunday reported 747 new COVID-19 cases and eight additional deaths.

One of those deaths was a woman in her 50s from San Juan County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions. Eleven new cases were reported in San Juan County Sunday.

State Department of Health officials said the total number of cases since the pandemic began now is 47,232 with 1,026 known deaths.

They said 224 of the new cases and three of the eight deaths were in Bernalillo County, the state’s largest that includes metro Albuquerque, with another 111 cases in Dona Ana County.

Officials said 61 new cases involved inmates at the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility in Valencia County.

On Sunday, “77 percent of general beds at New Mexico hospitals are occupied, and 65 percent of ICU beds across New Mexico hospitals are occupied,” the governor’s office said in a press release. “This includes patients hospitalized for COVID-19 and other illnesses.”

There are 21,623 COVID-19 patients the state designated as having recovered.

On Saturday, health officials reported 592 additional known virus cases and 11 additional deaths after reporting over 1,000 additional cases Friday with a single-day record of 13 deaths.

3:45 p.m.: After two consecutive days of new COVID-19 cases surpassing 1,000, the New Mexico Department of Health is reporting 592 new cases on Oct. 31. The new cases include 17 San Juan County residents.

The state also reported 11 new fatalities.

The new cases raise the total number of New Mexicans who have tested positive for the virus since March to 46,490 and of those people 1,018 have died.

On Oct. 31, there were 354 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the state.
