LAS CRUCES - Doña Ana County on Wednesday registered 17 more COVID-19 cases and three additional deaths related to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes the disease.

Since the first death reported on April 23, the state Department of Health has recorded 51 COVID-19-related deaths in the county.

The vast majority of those deaths have been residents at least 60 years old who were hospitalized. Most had underlying medical conditions, according to the DOH. Chronic underlying conditions are tracked because they may increase the likelihood of dying from COVID-19 disease.

The youngest to die was a woman in her 40s, and the oldest was a woman who had hit the century mark. Sixteen of the residents who died were living in congregate housing facilities, such as nursing homes.
